About the role

A Patient Safety Monitor provides patients in need of supervision with companionship and care, serving as a compassionate substitute for restraints or seclusion. Under clinical supervision, Patient Safety Monitors maintain constant visual observation of assigned patients, offering emotional support and alerting nursing staff to any changes in condition or patient concerns.

Responsibilities

  • Observe 1:1 patient watches for behaviors that could indicate potential problems for the patient or staff.
  • Remain alert at all times to ensure continuous supervision of the patient.
  • Monitor the patient’s room for a safe environment for behavioral health patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Immediately report any changes in patient behavior to clinical staff or the RN in charge.
  • Provide patients with emotional support and alert nursing staff when patients need assistance.
  • Handle sensitive, private information with discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Make immediate decisions in emergent situations while maintaining composure.
  • Maintain routine patient watch logs.
  • Communicate effectively at various social levels.
  • Refrain from performing unauthorized duties.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3+ months in a customer service-related position with proven, effective communication skills.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Outstanding communication, listening, and observation skills.
  • Ability to work well with others and maintain a professional appearance.
  • Calm, confident manner and ability to remain undeterred by distressed or combative patients.
  • Ability to make immediate decisions while maintaining composure in emergency response situations.
