The City of Sioux City is seeking a self-directed, experienced, collaborative, and forward-thinking Safety Manager to lead and enhance the City's comprehensive occupational safety and health program. About the Role

As the City's Safety Manager, you will work with leaders and employees across more than a dozen departments—including Police, Fire Rescue, Public Works, Utilities, Transit, Parks & Recreation, Airport, and Administrative Services—to reduce workplace injuries, ensure regulatory compliance, strengthen employee training, and continuously improve workplace safety. The City of Sioux City has a workforce of approximately 880 full-time, part-time, and seasonal employees. The selected candidate will have direct responsibility and authority to develop and manage the City's safety culture.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and administer the City's comprehensive occupational safety and health program.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate safety policies, procedures, and training programs.
  • Conduct workplace inspections, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and job safety analyses (JSAs).
  • Investigate workplace accidents and near misses to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, Iowa OSHA, and other applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations.
  • Coordinate employee safety training and promote a proactive safety culture throughout the organization.
  • Administer OSHA recordkeeping requirements and maintain Safety Data Sheet (SDS) programs.
  • Chair the City's Safety Committee and collaborate with department leadership on safety initiatives.
  • Work closely with injured employees, supervisors, healthcare providers, and third-party administrators to facilitate early return-to-work and transitional duty opportunities.
  • Monitor safety-related contracts, budgets, and program performance while identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Act as a consultant to departments and division managers, supervisors, and employees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Five (5) years of full-time related experience.
  • Availability outside of normal business hours to address safety-related issues.

Work Environment

This position combines office and field work. Approximately 75% of the work is performed in field environments, including construction sites, maintenance facilities, public works operations, utilities, transit, parks, and other municipal work locations. The position requires travel throughout the City in varying weather conditions and occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds.

Pay

Annual salary range of $84,620.79 - $115,808.96.
