About the role

The Safety Manager oversees project-wide safety and quality programs for a large-scale construction and data center project. This role manages safety processes, reviews inspection and test plans, tracks quality documentation, and ensures subcontractors and trade partners comply with all specifications and site-specific requirements. The Safety Manager plays a key role in commissioning and startup safety, verifying that installations meet design and owner standards while maintaining robust safety metrics and supporting audits.

Responsibilities

  • Manage project-wide safety and quality programs across construction and commissioning phases.
  • Review inspection and test plans (ITPs) to ensure they meet project and regulatory requirements.
  • Track and maintain quality documentation, including inspection records and test results.
  • Ensure subcontractors and trade partners meet all safety, quality, and specification requirements.
  • Oversee commissioning-related quality requirements and safety procedures.
  • Manage non-conformance reports (NCRs), including documentation, follow-up, and corrective actions.
  • Witness inspections and testing to verify compliance with design standards and owner expectations.
  • Verify that mechanical installation and related systems meet design specifications and owner standards.
  • Participate actively in project safety meetings, contributing insights and recommendations.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to safety observations and concerns raised on site.
  • Support owner-led audits by providing accurate safety and quality documentation and metrics.
  • Track safety metrics and trends, and report findings to project stakeholders.
  • Maintain compliance with site-specific safety requirements and project safety policies.
  • Coordinate commissioning and startup safety activities as the project moves into these phases.
  • Support mechanical startup planning to ensure safe and compliant execution.
  • Coordinate energization activities with a strong focus on safety and risk mitigation.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee lockout/tagout procedures for mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Manage safety for temporary operations during commissioning and startup.
  • Coordinate vendor startup activities to ensure adherence to safety and quality standards.
  • Support functional performance testing with a focus on safe operations and system integrity.
  • Participate in system turnover readiness reviews to confirm safety and quality requirements are met.
  • Regularly interact and collaborate with site safety teams, construction management, owner safety representatives, commissioning teams, mechanical project managers, mechanical superintendents, trade foremen, and equipment vendors to align on safety and quality goals.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of safety management experience in construction environments.
  • Experience working in data center projects, with at least 1 year of data center-specific safety experience.
  • Strong background in construction safety practices and procedures.
  • Hands-on experience with HVAC-related safety and quality oversight.
  • Proficiency in safety management, including hazard identification, mitigation, and reporting.
  • Ability to review and interpret inspection and test plans (ITPs).
  • Experience managing non-conformance reports (NCRs) and implementing corrective actions.
  • Capability to track and analyze safety metrics and maintain accurate records.
  • Experience supporting audits and ensuring compliance with site-specific safety requirements.
  • Familiarity with commissioning and startup safety, including mechanical startup and energization activities.
  • Knowledge of lockout/tagout procedures and temporary operations safety.
  • OSHA 30 certification.
  • OSHA 500 certification.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience collaborating with diverse project stakeholders, including safety teams, construction management, owner representatives, commissioning teams, mechanical project managers, superintendents, trade foremen, and equipment vendors.
  • Understanding of trade partner plans and coordination with subcontractors on safety and quality expectations.
  • Ability to participate effectively in safety meetings and respond constructively to safety observations.
  • Strong communication skills to convey safety requirements and quality standards clearly.
  • Organizational skills to manage documentation, track metrics, and support large-scale project activities.
  • Experience with functional performance testing and system turnover readiness reviews is beneficial.

Work Environment

This role is based on a major data center construction project in Port Washington, Wisconsin, supporting a multi-billion-dollar development. The Safety Manager works approximately 75% in the field and 25% in the office, spending significant time on active construction and commissioning sites, observing work, participating in inspections, and engaging with trade partners and vendors. The environment involves mechanical and HVAC systems, large-scale equipment, and complex commissioning activities. The position requires comfort in a dynamic construction setting with frequent interaction across project teams and vendors, and the ability to navigate both on-site field conditions and office-based planning and documentation work.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $25.00 – $55.00/hr. Individual compensation offered within this range will depend on qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
