Safety & Health Inspector Apprentice 1, Brooklyn (NY HELPS)

About the role

The incumbent within the Division of Safety & Health (DOSH) will plan, schedule, and conduct safety & health inspections of selected work sites such as state, county, city, and town offices. Inspections may also be conducted at places of public assembly, ski areas, carnivals, fairs and amusement parks, explosives magazines, power scaffolds, and other window-washing operations. Such work sites may include asbestos abatement projects.

Responsibilities

• Plan, schedule, and conduct safety & health inspections of work sites.
• Identify unsafe conditions and work practices.
• Protect workers and the public.
• Issue notices of violations.
• Enforce state and federal laws.
• Travel for training purposes, not exceeding one week for state programs and two weeks for federal programs.

Requirements

• Valid driver’s license and capacity to meet transportation needs of the position.
• Four years of experience in field inspections, occupational safety, or public safety.
• Associate degree may substitute for two years of specialized experience; bachelor's degree may substitute for four years of specialized experience.

Qualifications

• Completion of a registered apprenticeship in safety and health inspection.
• Salary grade 14 upon completion of Apprentice 1.
• Salary grade 16 upon completion of Apprentice 2.
