Safety & Health Inspector Apprentice 1, Albany (NY HELPS)

About the role

The incumbent within the Division of Safety & Health (DOSH) will plan, schedule, and conduct safety & health inspections of selected work sites such as state, county, city, and town offices, places of public assembly, ski areas, carnivals, fairs and amusement parks, explosives magazines, power scaffolds, and other window-washing operations. Such work sites may include asbestos abatement projects. The inspections are made in order to assure conformance with established standards, identify unsafe conditions and work practices, and to protect workers and the public. Additionally, the role may require issuing notices of violations and enforcing state and federal laws. Employees will be required to travel multiple days/nights for training purposes, not to exceed one week for state programs and two weeks for federal programs.

Requirements

• Valid New York State driver’s license and access to a motor vehicle, or otherwise demonstrate capacity to meet transportation needs.
• Four years of experience in field inspections pertaining to the enforcement of building laws, codes, and regulations or in an occupational safety or public safety setting as an evaluator or inspector for a public or private organization evaluating the effectiveness of safety devices, protective equipment, or safety programs; OR
• Four years of experience in an apprenticeable trade in the manufacturing or construction industries, or active duty military, or fire protection, which must include responsibility for the enforcement of safety standards and procedures by workers in that trade; OR
• Four years of experience with asbestos or mold inspections or abatement.

Qualifications

• Associate degree may substitute for two years of specialized experience; bachelor’s degree may substitute for four years of specialized experience.
• Degree must be from an educational institution accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education/Secretary of Education. If awarded by an institution outside of the U.S. and its territories, independent verification of equivalency is required.

Apprenticeship Details

• The Safety & Health Inspector apprenticeship is a registered program including on-the-job training and related instruction each year, expected to take approximately 18–24 months to complete.
• Apprentice begins at salary grade 14, advances to Apprentice 2 after one year upon successful completion of Apprentice 1, and advances to the journey level (salary grade 16) upon successful completion of Apprentice 2.
• Apprentices receive a Certificate of Completion from the Department of Labor, a nationally recognized credential.
