Safety & Environmental Compliance Manager

About the role

Manager is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating all safety and environmental mandates, programs, and activities. This position interfaces with site personnel, vendors, and regulatory agencies to ensure facility compliance and inspection readiness with OSHA, EPA, ADEM, and DOT. Responsibilities include managing the environmental health and safety budget, recordkeeping, reporting obligations, OSHA log maintenance, and all workers compensation activities.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain OSHA 300 log and handle all workers compensation claims, reporting, and follow-ups
  • Ensure OSHA compliance through planning and organizing safety training, filing, and archiving training documents for audits and inspections
  • File DEP/EPA forms including 25R, 26R, 330, 330GM, Tier II forms, Form R, medical waste, and other miscellaneous documents; manage documents for DEP/EPA inspections
  • Update and manage permits such as storm water permits, air quality permits, wastewater permits, and other miscellaneous permits
  • Serve as Project Manager for capital projects related to safety and environmental concerns; submit expenditure requests and await approval
  • Maintain compliance with Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) and Spill Prevention Control Countermeasures (SPCC)
  • Update, monitor, and integrate Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) into the web-based 3E System; conduct audits of hazardous materials
  • Work with the property insurance carrier to meet policy requirements
  • Establish safety awareness programs for employees and plan/execute the safety budget
  • Schedule and facilitate monthly safety meetings with the safety committee; document and distribute meeting minutes with resolutions
  • Focus on accident prevention and behavior-based safety programs; develop Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) and safe operation procedures for all processing equipment
  • Develop, implement, and monitor all training aspects for the facility, including job training, safety training, and quality training
  • Stay current with new safety/environmental mandates and laws; develop new policies as needed
  • Ensure compliance with food safety policies, procedures, and regulatory criteria, including SQF code, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering, Industrial Management, or a related field preferred; minimum of 5 years of relevant experience required
  • Candidates without a bachelor's degree must have a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience
  • Experience with behavior-based safety programs required

Qualifications

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent certification preferred
  • Competent and knowledgeable in OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory requirements in a manufacturing setting
  • Knowledgeable in safety principles, workers' compensation, and pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations
  • Skilled in risk assessment and analysis of potential hazards
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Comfortable speaking to large groups and facilitating meetings
  • People-oriented with the ability to interface with employees at all organizational levels

Physical Demands

  • Jobs require sufficient physical strength and dexterity to perform tasks, including intermittent sitting, standing, walking, climbing, squatting, kneeling, pushing, and pulling
  • Occasional lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds or more with assistance may be required
  • Must be willing and able to wear personal protective equipment as required by Company policy and/or legal requirements
  • Certain jobs may require working outside and/or in adverse temperatures (extreme heat, cold, humidity), exposure to vibrations, chemicals, fumes, and food allergens (e.g., soy, dairy)
  • May require working in confined and dark spaces, and at heights in excess of 18 feet

Schedule

  • Typical shifts are 8-12 hours per day
  • Additional unscheduled time after hours and on weekends may be required
