About the Role

The Safety Engineer supports the safety manager and project team in successfully completing construction projects. This role exercises judgment and discretion in making safety-related recommendations, implementing safety policies and procedures, and handling various safety matters in the field and office. The Safety Engineer assists the project team in planning, monitoring work activities, and correcting unsafe acts or conditions. This is a safety-sensitive position.

Responsibilities

  • Effectively communicate with stakeholders including Hensel Phelps staff, craft, and trade partners.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the company safety and health program, owner requirements, and applicable regulatory standards (e.g., EM 385-1-1).
  • Assist the project superintendent in completing, maintaining, and managing the accident prevention plan, safety management tool, and crisis management plan.
  • Participate in the six-step quality control/safety process, including reviewing activity hazard analyses and follow-up inspections.
  • Conduct project safety audits, including project point files.
  • Assist with OSHA inspections as necessary.
  • Support accident and near-miss investigations, including injury management and claim reporting.
  • Monitor Hensel Phelps and trade partner safety performance.
  • Attend awareness and competent person-level safety courses.
  • Learn the construction process and the roles and responsibilities of all positions.

Qualifications

  • A 4-year degree is preferred; an Occupational Safety and Health degree is suggested.
  • Valid Driver’s License (required).
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel-based templates), Prolog, Primavera, and AutoDesk Suite.

Physical Requirements

  • Moderate work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds frequently, and/or 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
  • Periodically walk, kneel, sit, crouch, reach, stoop, read/see, speak, push, pull, lift, stand, and type.
  • Frequently move about inside the office to access files, machinery, or equipment.
  • Constantly operate a computer and office machinery (calculator, copier, phone, printer).
  • Frequently communicate with employees and external stakeholders on various topics.
  • Constantly perform mathematical calculations, analyze data, and conceptualize formulas.
  • Regularly sit in a stationary position in front of a computer screen.
  • Constantly read written communications, mail, blueprints, and field measurements.
  • Climb ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps at various heights.
  • Maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching.
  • Bend the body downward and forward by the spine at the waist.
  • Visual acuity and ability to operate a vehicle as certified.
  • Occasionally exposed to high and low temperatures.
  • Frequently exposed to noisy environments and outdoor elements (precipitation, wind).
