Safety Education Instructor
Job Description and Position Requirements
The Department of Campus Recreation is seeking Penn State students to fill the position of Safety Education Instructor. Campus Recreation provides various fitness, wellness, and recreational programs including the Intramural Building, McCoy Natatorium, Stone Valley Outdoor Recreation Area, Tennis Center, White Building, Outdoor Adventures, Aquatics, Club Sports, Fitness and Wellness Programs, and Intramural Sports.
Responsibilities
- Instruct American Red Cross Adult CPR/AED and First Aid Courses and/or American Red Cross Lifeguarding Courses to participants of varying ages, experiences, learning styles, and abilities.
- Demonstrate confidence and effectively use course materials.
- Manage classroom and ensure participant safety by maintaining a hazard-free environment and ensuring the safety of all materials and equipment.
- Complete necessary paperwork and assist in lifeguard pre-employment screenings and in-services.
- Respectfully manage disagreements and model positive rapport with participants (including in online communities).
- Arrive on time for all assigned shifts or secure appropriate coverage.
- Remain calm in stressful and/or emergency situations.
- Maintain regular and frequent communication with supervisory team.
- Interact with diverse groups through various situations.
- Show independent judgment and maintain a strong sense of integrity.
Qualifications
- Obtain and maintain American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor or CPR/First Aid Instructor or Basic Life Support Instructor Certification as well as American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification or American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
- Complete Penn State University Bloodborne Pathogens training and both criminal and FBI background checks (prior to first shift).
Skills
Must be able to accommodate a variable work schedule that includes mornings, evenings, weekends, and some holiday hours.
Benefits
Work will take place on the White Building, McCoy Natatorium (indoor or outdoor), and Intramural Building. Safety Education Instructors can work a maximum of 24 hours (International Students 20 hours) per week during the academic year and 40 hours per week during breaks for Penn State University.
Pay and Schedule
Safety Education Instructors can work a maximum of 24 hours (International Students 20 hours) per week during the academic year and 40 hours per week during breaks for Penn State University. Work will take place on the White Building, McCoy Natatorium (indoor or outdoor), and Intramural Building. Some holiday hours are required.
Background Checks/Clearances
This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.
Campus Security Crime Statistics
Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and the Pennsylvania Act of 1988, Penn State publishes a combined Annual Security and Annual Fire Safety Report (ASR). The ASR includes crime statistics and institutional policies concerning campus security, such as those concerning alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, the reporting of crimes, sexual assault, and other matters.
