Rough Rider Mentorship Teacher

About the role

The Rough Rider Mentorship Teacher works with children of all ages, supporting the implementation of a multi-disciplinary after-school curriculum designed for K-12 students. Teachers work directly under the supervision of the Rough Rider Mentorship and College Readiness Program Director, facilitating hands-on projects, experiments, and workshops. The role requires a high level of energy and versatility, as teachers move between diverse subject areas—including Science, Sociology, Technology, Trades, Engineering, Art, Acting, Allied Health, History, Humanities, Math, and Medicine (STEAHM)—to help students bridge academic gaps and explore career pathways.

Responsibilities

• Manages an After-School Program with a focus on STEAHM-based lessons; helps students execute complex projects such as engineering builds, artistic creations, or scientific experiments
• Designs age-appropriate activities for the students enrolled in the program
• Enrolls students in the program using the provided enrollment packet
• Takes weekly roll of students attending the program and shares this information with the Rough Rider Mentorship Program Director
• Evaluates students at the end of each semester (Fall, Spring, Summer) and completes the required co-curricular assessment forms and submits them to the Mentorship Program Director by the specified deadline(s)
• Occasionally travels to main campus in Las Vegas to pick up supplies, snacks, etc.
• Posts informative communication about the program
• Calls parents when necessary about matters involving the program or student matters
• Opens and closes the Luna facility where the program is held
• Does the occasional RP (Requisition for Purchase) or memo for items needed for the program
• Makes phone calls and does other leg work necessary to conduct the week's lesson(s) and promote the program
• Facilitates breakout groups of K-12 students to ensure they understand project steps and safety protocols
• Provides vigilant oversight during hands-on activities, ensuring all students follow safety guidelines
• Sets up, tears down, and maintains materials for daily experiments and activities across the STEAHM spectrum
• Identifies students struggling with specific concepts (e.g., Math or History) and provides one-on-one, in-the-moment tutoring/mentoring to keep them on track with the group project
• Encourages student curiosity and participation; serves as a positive role model for younger students exploring higher education environments
• Reports both attendance and co-curricular assessment paperwork meant to track student attendance and participation and success; provides feedback to the Program Director on project efficacy

Qualifications

• Strong academic record in at least two STEAHM-related fields
• Previous experience working with K-12 children (camp counselor, coach, or tutor) is highly preferred
• Should enjoy engaging with and instructing children
• Must successfully pass Luna Community College's Background Clearance process, specifically for working with minors

• Ability to simplify complex concepts for K-12 age groups (Elementary through High School)

Work environment

This is an active role. Teachers must be able to stand for long periods, move between classrooms/labs, and lift up to 25 pounds of project materials or equipment. Work occurs in various environments, including standard classrooms, computer labs, communal garden, vocational trades shops, and outdoor field sites.
