Rough Rider Mentorship Teacher

About the Role
The Rough Rider Mentorship Teacher works with children of all ages, focusing on classroom management, curriculum development, and supporting the implementation of a multi-disciplinary after-school curriculum for K-12 students. Teachers report directly to the Rough Rider Mentorship and College Readiness Program Director and facilitate hands-on projects, experiments, and workshops across diverse subject areas—including Science, Sociology, Technology, Trades, Engineering, Art, Acting, Allied Health, History, Humanities, Math, and Medicine (STEAHM). The role requires high energy and versatility to help students bridge academic gaps and explore career pathways.
Responsibilities
- Program Creation/Facilitation & Project Oversight
- Manage an After-School Program with STEAHM-based lessons (Science, Sociology, Technology, Trades, Engineering, Art, Allied Health, Humanities, Math, Medicine).
- Help students execute complex projects such as engineering builds, artistic creations, or scientific experiments.
- Design age-appropriate activities for enrolled students.
- Enroll students using the provided enrollment packet.
- Take weekly attendance and share records with the Program Director.
- Evaluate students at the end of each semester (Fall, Spring, Summer) and complete co-curricular assessment forms by specified deadlines.
- Travel occasionally to the main campus in Las Vegas to pick up supplies or snacks.
- Post informative communication about the program.
- Contact parents regarding program or student matters.
- Open and close the Luna facility where the program is held.
- Submit occasional Requisition for Purchase (RP) or memos for program needs.
- Make phone calls and perform other tasks to conduct weekly lessons and promote the program.
- Small Group Leadership
- Facilitate breakout groups of K-12 students to ensure understanding of project steps and safety protocols.
- Lab & Shop Safety
- Provide vigilant oversight during hands-on activities to ensure all students follow safety guidelines.
- Experiment Support
- Set up, tear down, and maintain materials for daily experiments and activities across the STEAHM spectrum.
- Mentorship and Student Engagement
- Provide differentiated support to students struggling with specific concepts (e.g., Math or History) through one-on-one tutoring/mentoring.
- Encourage student curiosity and participation; serve as a positive role model for younger students.
- Administrative and Operations
- Report attendance and co-curricular assessment paperwork to track student participation and success.
- Provide feedback to the Program Director on project efficacy.
Requirements
- Strong academic record in at least two STEAHM-related fields.
- Previous experience working with K-12 children (e.g., camp counselor, coach, or tutor) is highly preferred.
- Must enjoy engaging with and instructing children.
- Must successfully pass Luna Community College’s Background Clearance process for working with minors.
