About the role
The Rotating Equipment Specialist role within the Knoxville Maintenance Organization serves a vital role for the team. This role utilizes technical knowledge, EHS expertise, and manufacturing experience to support the maintenance staff and enable safe and reliable operations of mechanical equipment across the site.
Responsibilities
- Acts as technical resource for the maintenance team.
- Reviews and adjusts preventative maintenance activities to assure reliability of equipment.
- Checks sizing of components and parts.
- Specifies, requisitions, and supports the installation of parts and equipment.
- Covers identification of critical spare parts.
- Serves as a key influential leader for the team and serves as a mentor for team members with less experience.
- Supports maintenance planning activities as needed.
- Identifies and supports training of mechanics.
- Oversees and is accountable for the quality of repairs and takes action to assure consistent high-quality results.
- Serves as a technical resource for the maintenance team.
- Troubleshoots and directs repairs of malfunctions and documents failure analysis.
- Collects equipment operation and history data to facilitate reliability improvements.
- Works within established Maintenance Work Processes and helps resolve issues that surface as a result of planning and scheduling work.
- Interfaces with Maintenance and Reliability engineering to support maintenance and reliability improvement efforts.
Qualifications
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree or relevant military experience at or above a U.S. E5 or Canadian Petty Officer 2nd Class or Sergeant ranking plus 3 years of relevant experience.
- In lieu of a degree, 10 or more years of experience working directly with rotating equipment.
- Willing and able to participate in maintenance support on call schedule (approximately one week per quarter).
- A degree in mechanical engineering is a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Able to meet the following physical demands of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Lift, push, carry and pull up to a maximum of 50 lbs.
- Able to work in a laboratory environment which requires minimal supervision.
- Adapt to the Rhythm of Shiftwork.
- Work in and around tight spaces and large machinery.
- Be able to repeatedly sit down and stand up from a chair at a workstation.
- Walk and stand for extended periods of time.
- Frequent bending and reaching.
- Able to climb stairs / ladders.
- Able to perform repetitive motion tasks.
- Work in an area with hazardous materials.
- Must be able to wear and use all personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to safety glasses, fire retardant clothing, ear plugs, and/or acceptable safety shoes, including harnesses with a total weight capacity of 300lbs.
Skills
- Rotating Equipment Expertise: Uses deep technical knowledge of pumps, compressors, turbines, motors, and related equipment to diagnose issues, optimize performance, and ensure safe, reliable operation across the site.
- Reliability Improvement: Analyzes equipment performance, maintenance history, and failure data to identify opportunities that improve asset reliability and reduce downtime.
- Troubleshooting: Investigates equipment malfunctions, conducts failure analysis, and directs effective repair solutions to restore operational performance.
- Maintenance Planning: Applies maintenance work processes, preventative maintenance strategies, and spare parts management practices to support efficient execution of maintenance activities.
- Technical Leadership: Provides technical guidance, mentors mechanics and maintenance team members, and drives consistent execution of high-quality maintenance and repair practices.
