Robotics Systems Engineer II, Amazon Robotics - Tech Deployment

Join Amazon's Robotics (AR) Technology Deployment team within the Amazon Robotics (AR) organization to deploy robotics across North America's fulfillment network. In AR TD, we deploy leading-edge industrial robotics and customer fulfillment technologies across North America Stores operations. We raise the bar on the speed, quality, and cost of deploying industrial technologies at scale, functioning as the field team who plan, execute, and launch the technologies developed by our internal design and product strategy partners in AR.

About the role

As a Systems Engineer in AR TD, you will oversee large-scale project planning, installation, and launch of industrial automation technologies across Amazon’s growing Stores network. This field engineering position demands strong technical skills for deploying robotic equipment, including mechanical and electrical systems, network configurations, and software coordination. The ideal candidate has experience with complex electro-mechanical and network systems, large-scale installations, and system troubleshooting.

You will work with cross-functional partners across Amazon Fulfillment Technology & Robotics engineering, safety, product strategy, software, supply chain, third-party installers, contracted deployment engineers, construction teams, and internal operations customer teams. You will serve as the lead on-site project manager, providing technical oversight for the installation of Amazon-designed automation equipment.

This Systems Engineer position is an individual contributor role, influencing and leading stakeholders from planning through go-live of each project. Project durations vary from a few days to several months. This is a travel-based role, requiring up to 75% or more travel across North America.

Responsibilities

• Own multiple simultaneous deployments of a single technology across multiple sites or oversee multi-technology deployments within a single site, delivering within documented standards.
• Balance experience working with high-complexity industrial technologies and complex, multi-dependency project management.
• Proactively take independent initiative in improving system performance and handling end-to-end deployment.
• Drive continuous improvement ideas into the deployment cycle time (safety, quality, and productivity) and share engineering design feedback with hardware engineering and product teams to simplify installation.
• Build relationships and capture and synthesize the voice of the customer.
• Manage the tactical deployment of large-scale industrial automation technologies, ranging in technical complexity and product maturity from early alpha/beta to mature Generally Available.
• Own tactical execution (onsite coordination of installation and acceptance testing) to achieve the target “go-live” date for each project assigned.
• Collaborate with hardware engineering, technical program managers, product managers, and internal customers (including site maintenance and operations teams) to convert technical requirements into refined deployment execution documents (schedules, Standard Operating Procedures, dependencies, etc.).
• Improve operational metrics and team processes through automation and optimization.
• Independently resolve difficult technical problems during deployment, considering operational burden and making appropriate trade-offs between time, quality, and resources.
• Create and improve standard work documents and operational guidebooks, and work toward automating or improving team processes.
• Influence internal and partner teams toward meeting team-level goals.
• Develop subject matter expertise in one or more deployment domains.
• Mentor junior engineers and participate in technical assessments.
• Drive operational excellence initiatives with measurable results.

A day in the life

In this role, you will focus on the execution of end-to-end deployment and manage technical ambiguity around the integration of workcells in fulfillment centers. Daily, you will collaborate with hardware engineering, technical program managers, product managers, construction teams, and internal customers (including site maintenance and operations teams) to ensure a safe, on-time, high-quality product is delivered.

You will travel to project sites and collaborate both virtually and in person to align all business stakeholders on program status. You will manage day-to-day project execution and work on continuous improvement activities to enhance deployment execution first-pass yield. You will work with senior engineers and your manager to develop technical depth and build strategic thinking skills for future growth.

Requirements

• Lift and move totes up to 49 pounds each.
• Regular bending, lifting, stretching, and reaching both below the waist and above the head.
• Walking in the fulfillment center and around the area with great frequency; facilities are over a quarter mile in length.
• Ability to stand/walk for up to 10-12 hours.
• Work in environments with variable noise levels, lighting conditions, and temperature variations.
• Able to access all areas of the building (ascending and descending ladders, stairs, gangways safely and without limitation).

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree.
• Experience with robotics work cells and their control systems, or experience interpreting, modifying, and developing mechanical and electrical drawings.
• Demonstrated ability to work with PLCs, SCADA systems, and network infrastructure.
• Ability to travel domestically 75% or more a year.
• 5+ years of experience troubleshooting robotics systems or other complex mechanical-electrical or networked systems to resolve escalations, including quality hand-off, live order testing, operational readiness testing, and monitoring system performance.
• 5+ years of experience in project management related to the deployment, retrofits, or technical maintenance of large-scale industrial robotics.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in a 24/7 production environment.
• Experience working with and managing third-party vendors.
• MBA or graduate degree in engineering or STEM field.
• 5+ years of experience with machine Overall Equipment Effectiveness and Key Performance Indicator metrics tools (such as Tableau).
• Experience/certifications in Six Sigma, lean manufacturing, and/or PMP.
• Excellent business communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders to leadership 2+ levels above.

• USA, MA, North Reading: $129,200.00 - $174,800.00 USD annually.

• USA, TN, Nashville: $122,800.00 - $166,100.00 USD annually.
• USA, TX, Austin: $129,200.00 - $174,800.00 USD annually.
