Roadway Project Engineer

Job Duties

  • Creates and reviews project design calculations, quantities takeoffs, specifications, plans and contract documents.
  • Works within the Transportation Team assigning responsibilities.
  • Plan, schedule, conduct or coordinate detailed phases of engineering work.
  • Attends project meetings and presents specific aspects of engineering assignments.
  • Conducts analysis choosing appropriate applications.
  • Works within project schedules and budgets.
  • Provides leadership, coaching, and or mentoring to junior engineers in the development of plans, reports, and specifications.
  • Completes training on assigned tasks.
  • Applies INDOT design manual and AAHTO principles to highway design.
  • Utilizes roadway design CADD software.
  • Knowledge of Road design software such as Open Roads.
  • Participates in occasional site visits in construction sites and remote outdoor work environments.
  • Occasional travel to client meetings and site visits.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
  • Professional Engineer’s license in Indiana or the ability to obtain through reciprocity within 6 months.
  • Strong team collaboration, oral and written communication, design expertise, and problem-solving skills are required.
  • Experience with INDOT standards, specifications, and deliverables for Federally Funded Projects.
  • Proficiency in CADD General Characteristics.

Technical Responsibilities

  • Serves as the technical advisor for the organization in the application of advanced concepts and methods in an assigned area.
  • Keeps informed of new developments and requirements affecting the organization for the purpose of recommending changes in programs or applications.
  • Develops new techniques and/or improved processes, materials, or products.
  • Values and analyzes sustainable performance of complex engineering projects from a systems perspective.

Project and Task Management

  • Oversees a project team of engineers and technicians.
  • Plans, schedules, and coordinates the preparation of documents or activities for multiple major projects or is responsible for an entire program of an organization.
  • Analyzes project management plans for complex engineering projects.
  • Understands project delivery uncertainties and uses risk management principles to address them.
  • Reviews operational procedures to ensure compliance with applicable policies and performance measures.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Manages, supervises, and guides a team of engineers and technicians.
  • Provides continued mentored experience to senior staff.
  • Integrates professional attitudes relevant to the practice of engineering and fosters creativity, curiosity, flexibility, and dependability in staff.
