Roadway Engineer - Mid Level

Whitman, Requardt & Associates, LLP is a 110+ year-old firm known for quality work and a commitment to employee career growth. We are seeking an experienced Roadway Engineer to join our Transportation - Highway team in Richmond, VA.

About the role

The Roadway Engineer will manage projects, contribute to roadway design, and ensure quality control of contract documents. Responsibilities include developing 3D surface models, feasibility studies, preliminary design alternatives for NEPA/SEPA documentation, cross sections, and final construction plans. The role involves mentoring junior staff, managing budgets, scopes, schedules, and clients, as well as participating in transportation project planning and design.

Responsibilities

• Design roadway alignments, including rural/urban multi-modal facilities and controlled-access interstate corridors with interchange design
• Perform quality control/quality assurance of contract documents
• Develop 3D surface models, feasibility studies, and conceptual designs
• Prepare preliminary design alternatives for NEPA/SEPA Environmental Documentation
• Create final design contract documents, including construction plans, specifications, special provisions, cost estimates, and technical reports
• Mentor and train younger staff
• Manage work planning, production scheduling, and project budgets, scopes, and schedules
• Lead business development and client coordination
• Develop and manage scope, man-hour, and fee estimates
• Manage multiple projects, assignments, and teams
• Develop complete contract advertisement documents, including plans, engineer’s estimates, bid quantities, and contract specifications

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
• 11–15 years of roadway engineering experience (less may be considered for significant relevant experience)
• Professional Engineer (PE) licensed in Virginia or ability to obtain within 6 months
• Experience with VDOT Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build, and/or CMGC projects
• Proficiency with MicroStation, InRoads, and GEOPAK
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written, at all organizational levels
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multi-office environment
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

Preferred Qualifications

• OpenRoads Designer (ORD) experience/training
• Alternative delivery experience, including PPP and Progressive Design-Build procurement
• Experience in NC, MD, WV, FL, TX, DE, and/or PA
• General Engineering Services Consultant (GESC) experience
• Construction phase engineering services experience (RFIs, schedules, pay requests, field verifications)

Pay

The expected compensation range for this position is $140,000 – $215,000 per year, depending on relevant knowledge, training, skills, work location, and experience.
