Roadway Design and Safety Manager
About the Role
Ulteig is seeking a Roadway Design and Safety Manager to lead a high-performing team of civil engineers delivering resilient, safety-focused transportation solutions. This role is based in Denver, Colorado, and will support clients across State DOTs, Counties, and Municipalities. The ideal candidate is a people-centered technical leader who understands that roadway safety and system resilience are inseparable, designing transportation systems that meet today’s needs while performing reliably under future demands such as climate stressors, traffic growth, and evolving user expectations.
This position reports to an Associate Director and works closely with project managers, subject matter experts, and client leadership to advance Ulteig’s reputation as a trusted partner in safe, resilient roadway systems. This is a leadership opportunity to build, lead, and make a lasting impact.
Responsibilities
- Project Technical Leadership – 50%
- Manages and leads engineering activities during the proposal, design, and construction stages of small and large projects.
- Maintains high levels of quality and responsiveness to meet internal and external client requirements.
- Assigns, manages, and coordinates staffing and workload for project development.
- Reviews project drawings, calculations, and specifications, assuming responsibility as needed.
- People Leadership – 25%
- Provides strategic direction, leadership, and technical oversight to achieve individual, team, department, and enterprise goals.
- Develops staff’s technical, leadership, and soft skills through annual goals, career development planning, one-on-one meetings, and performance reviews.
- Communicates department and team-level decisions, strategies, and rationale.
- Fosters an environment where training, self-development, quality, and innovation are key components of the team culture.
- Establishes a safe and inclusive workplace for all employees.
- Business Performance Leadership – 25%
- Manages and develops existing client relationships by staying in regular contact with key clients.
- Partners with team members to promote revenue growth and expansion of services with existing and prospective clients.
- Supports proposal efforts by developing resources and reviewing proposals with the Proposal Development Team, Project Technical Teams, and Subject Matter Experts.
- Develops and implements operating policies, tools, resources, and processes to enable team success.
- Collaborates with shared services to ensure business processes and tools meet project management, tracking, and reporting needs.
Requirements
- A B.S. in Civil Engineering, Planning, or equivalent is required.
- Civil Professional Engineer (PE), Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE), or American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) licensure preferred.
- A minimum of 10+ years of engineering experience in design and/or construction in the transportation engineering field.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, management, clients, public, and external agencies.
- Analytical, self-motivated, and able to work in high-pressure situations while maintaining a positive and enthusiastic attitude.
- Strong information management skills and ability to manage multiple projects with clear expectations and timeliness.
- Excellent presentation and verbal/written communication skills.
- High level of initiative in exploring new opportunities while understanding organizational risk.
- Proven experience with Microsoft Software Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and additional specialty software.
- Openness to innovation, including embracing and applying evolving technology and AI tools to enhance workflows and drive continuous improvement.
- Must have authorization to work permanently in the U.S.

Pay
Target base compensation range for this role is $141,800–$184,400. Factors that may determine your actual salary include job-specific skills, education, training, job location, years of experience, and comparison to other employees in this role.
