Administrative Functions

• Aid the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities.
• Develop, maintain, and update written policies and procedures for the nursing service department.
• Maintain current reference material at nurses’ stations.
• Recommend written material to assist the nursing service department.
• Ensure the Nursing Service Procedures Manual is up-to-date.
• Ensure nursing service personnel comply with the procedures in the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
• Make written and oral reports to the Director as necessary.
• Periodically review department policies and procedures.
• Make recommendations for revisions to the Director.
• Coordinate nursing services with other resident services.
• Absorb and monitor absenteeism to ensure adequate staffing.
• Report problem areas to the Director.
• Ensure all personnel follow established policies and procedures.

Committee Functions

• Attend various facility committees (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Quality Assessment).
• Prepare and present written and/or oral reports of nursing service programs and activities to committee meetings.
• Provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee.
• Develop and implement recommendations from established committees.

Nursing Care Functions

• Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions and their care needs.
• Greet newly admitted residents and escort them to their rooms.
• Make rounds with physicians as necessary.
• Inform the Director of delayed physician visits.
• Consult with residents, families, and physicians to plan care.
• Notify the Director of changes in resident conditions.
• Visit residents daily to assess their physical and emotional status.
• Ensure direct nursing care is provided by qualified personnel.
• Take vital signs and collect specimens as necessary.
• Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as needed.
• Report problem areas to the Director.
• Assist in developing and implementing corrective actions.
• Keep the Director informed of resident status and other matters.
• Monitor seriously ill residents.
• Authorize the use of restraints when necessary.
• Ensure proper medication administration and storage.
• Inspect treatment areas daily.
• Check on residents unable to call for help.
• Meet with residents and family members as necessary.
• Report problems to the Director.
• Arrange transportation for discharged residents.
• Inform family members of resident deaths.
• Call funeral homes as requested.

Staff Development

• Develop and conduct in-service training classes.
• Create and implement annual facility in-service training programs.
• Plan and supervise clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
• Attend and participate in continuing education programs.

Safety and Sanitation

• Develop safety standards for the nursing service department.
• Evaluate and classify routine and job-related tasks involving potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
• Train personnel on appropriate procedures for handling personal protective equipment.
• Monitor personnel to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
• Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of nursing service work areas and resident care rooms.
• Ensure personnel follow handwashing and hand hygiene procedures.
• Conduct fire safety and disaster preparedness drills.
