Responsibilities

• Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing day-to-day nursing activities in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines governing long-term care facilities.
• Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating written policies and procedures for the nursing service department.
• Ensure reference materials (e.g., PDRs, regulations, professional standards) at nurses' stations are current and recommend additional materials to support department needs.
• Maintain and update the Nursing Service Procedures Manual to reflect current procedures and ensure compliance.
• Report orally and in writing to the Director regarding nursing service operations as required.
• Periodically review department policies, procedure manuals, and job descriptions, recommending revisions to the Director.
• Coordinate nursing services with other resident services to ensure continuity of care.
• Ensure nursing service personnel comply with their job descriptions and participate in the facility’s quality assurance program.
• Participate in facility surveys and inspections conducted by authorized government agencies.
• Review and update residents' written discharge plans as required.
• Plan and meet with nursing staff and support personnel to coordinate department services, programs, and activities.
• Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required, completing necessary accident/incident reports.
• Interpret department policies to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies.
• Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, and charting.
• Safeguard resident and facility information by not disclosing user IDs, passwords, or protected health information, and report violations promptly.
• Attend facility committee meetings (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Quality Assessment) and prepare reports as directed.
• Ensure sufficient licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, and certified nursing assistants are available for each shift to maintain quality care.
• Develop work assignments and delegate administrative authority to Charge Nurses.
• Monitor and supervise nurse aide trainees under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
• Conduct daily rounds to ensure nursing personnel perform duties according to standards and report findings to the Director.
• Monitor absenteeism to ensure adequate staffing and report issues to the Director.
• Review complaints and grievances from department personnel and report to the Director as necessary.
• Maintain a positive working rapport with interdepartmental personnel to meet residents' needs.
• Create a calm and supportive environment for residents and staff.
• Conduct regular shift meetings to address and correct problem areas or improve services.
• Review and evaluate department workforce, making recommendations on staffing, evaluations, and disciplinary actions.
• Inform nursing staff of new admissions, room assignments, and prepare rooms accordingly.
• Make rounds with physicians, encourage timely documentation, and report missed visits to the Director.
• Consult with residents, families, and physicians to plan care, treatment, and rehabilitation.
• Notify attending physicians and next of kin of changes in residents' conditions.
• Visit residents daily to observe and evaluate physical and emotional status.
• Provide direct nursing care, including starting IVs, obtaining specimens, taking vitals, and administering medications as ordered.
• Review nurses' notes to ensure they reflect resident responses to care and comply with resident wishes.
• Monitor seriously ill residents and authorize restraint use according to facility policies.
• Ensure compliance with medication administration, storage, and control procedures.
• Inspect treatment areas daily to maintain cleanliness and safety.
• Frequently check on residents unable to call for help and meet with residents/families as needed.
• Assist in arranging transportation for discharged residents and notify families of resident deaths.
• Participate in developing, planning, and conducting in-service training classes to educate nursing staff.
• Assist in developing annual facility training programs (e.g., OSHA, TB, HIPAA, Abuse Prevention, Safety, Infection Control).
• Plan clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees and participate in continuing education to maintain licensure.
• Assist the Safety Officer in developing safety standards for the nursing service department.
• Identify and classify job-related functions with potential exposure to blood/body fluids and ensure proper training and equipment are provided.
• Monitor compliance with safety regulations, handwashing procedures, and infection control practices.
• Ensure nursing service areas are maintained in a clean and sanitary manner.
• Participate in fire safety and disaster preparedness drills.
• Develop, implement, and maintain infection control and safety programs.
