About the role
Answers patient inquiries over the telephone, assessing the severity of the patient's symptoms and medical needs according to triage algorithms. Guides the patient to the appropriate level of care; schedules patient appointments over the phone with appropriate healthcare providers/facilities/physicians. Documents information provided to patients during triage in health record systems; records patients' health conditions for follow-up patient care. Maintains and develops triage protocols; ensures patients' healthcare information is updated on time. Role does answer inquiries through multiple variations of technology, depending on department. Educates patients based on calls that come in.
Responsibilities
- Assess patient symptoms and medical needs via telephone using triage algorithms.
- Direct patients to the appropriate level of care and schedule appointments with healthcare providers.
- Document triage interactions and patient health conditions in electronic health records.
- Maintain and update triage protocols and patient healthcare information.
- Respond to patient inquiries using various communication technologies.
- Educate patients based on incoming calls.
Qualifications
- Graduate from an accredited nursing program preferred (e.g., AACN, ACEN, NLN CNEA).
- Bachelor’s Degree in nursing preferred.
- One year of healthcare experience preferred.
- Currently holds an unencumbered RN license with the State Board of Nursing where the practice occurs and/or possess multistate licensure if in a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state.
- Nurses performing telephone nursing practice require licensure in the states where the patients reside.
- Must complete all licensing requirements for the role within the first 30 days of employment.
- Obtains and maintains required department-specific competencies and certifications.
Pay
$29.50 - $44.50 per hour
Schedule
- PRN (as needed) with varying weekly hours.
- Day shifts, 8-hour shifts.
