About the role
The Telephone Triage Nurse provides telephonic triage to patients across a range of medical conditions using established protocols. This role requires strong clinical and communication skills to assess patient conditions, determine urgency, and guide patients to the appropriate care setting.
Responsibilities
- Assess patients' conditions and medical history to determine urgency and appropriate level of care through thorough and accurate phone-based triage.
- Provide immediate medical advice and guidance to patients over the phone using established protocols, clinical guidelines, and available resources.
- Give patients clear instructions regarding follow-up care or where to seek emergency medical attention.
- Document all patient interactions, including assessments and interventions, in compliance with McLeod Health standards and HIPAA regulations.
- Assist in scheduling appointments, referrals, and follow-up visits.
- Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, protocols, and quality standards.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare providers to ensure proper patient care and continuity of care.
- Participate in regular training and continuing education to stay updated with medical practices and enhance clinical skills.
- Offer compassionate or emotional support to patients or family members during stressful or uncertain medical scenarios.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum of 2 years of clinical nursing experience, with preferred experience in emergency, urgent care, telehealth, triage nursing, or primary care settings.
- Previous experience in a triage or telehealth role preferred.
- Registered Nurse (RN) license.
