Overview

$10,000 Sign on Bonus (external applicants only; 3-year commitment). Relocation: $5,000 for >100 miles, $2,500 for 50–100 miles. BSN Bonus: $2,500 (external applicants only, RN >1 year).

Unit Highlights

  • Unit: NT7 Digestive Surgical Unit, 43-bed unit
  • Patient population: Acute and chronic digestive surgical patients, including bariatric (ASMBS certified), trunk trauma, high-acuity surgical advanced care, and patients from oral maxillofacial surgery through colon rectal surgeries. As a level trauma center, most regional trauma patients are admitted here.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4–6 for surgical/medical patients; 1:3 for surgical advanced care patients
  • Culture: High-acuity critical thinking unit with extensive collaboration with surgical residents and attendings. Team-focused, with strong emphasis on education, patient comfort, and safety. Highest Daisy-recognized unit in the organization.
  • Resources: Full-time educator, part-time educator, 2 nurse supervisors, manager, and charge nurses.

Frequent Nursing Skills & Equipment Used

  • Wound VACs, TPN, PPN, epidurals, chest tubes, drips, PEG tubes, colostomy/ileostomy, tracheostomy, JP drains, Penrose drains
  • Lift equipment, Foley/IV/NG/Mediport insertions, central line care and lab draws
  • Nursing prioritization, IV pumps, PCA pumps, feeding pumps, SCDs, telemetry monitoring, patient connection

Qualifications

  • Education: H.S. Diploma/GED
  • Licensure/Certification: Licensed Registered Professional Nurse (RN) – Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR); Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days – American Heart Association (AHA)

Responsibilities

  • Perform all responsibilities and duties required by unit as specific to scope of service.
  • Implement procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice.
  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided.
  • Complete initial assessment upon patient admission and develop appropriate plan of care based on patient and family needs.
  • Implement plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures; modify plan based on continuous evaluation.
  • Take responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting/correcting safety hazards and incidents.
  • Communicate with others directly and privately to resolve issues; offer constructive feedback for peer development; confer with colleagues to expand knowledge base.
  • Identify own learning needs and take initiative to begin appropriate solutions.
  • Fulfill all requirements of departmental competencies.
  • Provide post-operative care for the complex surgical population; assess and intervene appropriately to ensure positive outcomes.
  • Monitor and care for newly tracheostomies; assess and maintain wounds requiring wound VAC and other complex wound management.
  • Assess, manage, and educate patients and families on new ostomies.
  • Work collaboratively with general surgical residency and OMFS residency services.

Pay

$38.93 – $63.35 per hour (actual offer dependent on experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts, and compensation model).
