About the role
We provide direct patient care in a specialty unit, collaborating across disciplines to coordinate care and providing patient and family education. The role involves evaluating learning needs, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care, monitoring patient condition, delegating care, and may involve precepting students and new hires.
Responsibilities
- Collaborates as needed across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including disposition, referral, and spiritual and, or psychosocial support needs.
- Evaluates learning needs of the patient and, or family and provides patient and family education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances.
- Plans, implements, and evaluates patient care based on patient assessment to optimize outcomes and maximize available resources.
- Maintains awareness of patient condition and communicates as necessary.
- Delegates patient care to ancillary personnel effectively.
- May precept student nurses and new hires.

Department specific credentials
- ONCC Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider Certificate Required for those RNs administering chemotherapy.
- APHON Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider card required within 12 months of hire for those RNs administering chemotherapy for oncologic indication within the pediatric setting.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required for ICU, ED, PACU, Endo, Tele, OB, MHN Pre-Op and Specialty Procedural areas.
- PALS required for Pediatric areas with the exception of NICU.
- NRP certification required for NICU – if RN is coming from a non NICU background, they have 30 days from date of hire to obtain NRP.
- Certification in Fetal Monitoring through National Credential Center or through AWOHNN (Intermediate or Advanced) for L&D RNs must be completed prior to completion of job orientation.
- RN Fellowship Program requires one (1) year of RN independent practice not inclusive of nurse orientation.
- RN Fellowship specialties require ACLS and BLS Certifications.
- Newly licensed RNs have six (6) months to obtain ACLS and, or PALS.
