About the role

Provides direct patient care in an area designated as a specialty unit in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice and with the policies, values, and mission of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates as needed across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including disposition, referral, and spiritual and/or psychosocial support needs.
  • Evaluates learning needs of the patient and/or family and provides patient and family education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances.
  • Effectively delegates patient care to ancillary personnel. May precept student nurses and new hires.
  • Plans, implements, and evaluates patient care based on patient assessment to optimize outcomes and maximize available resources. Monitors, documents, and communicates patient condition as appropriate.

Requirements

  • Accredited Program: Nursing (Required)
  • ACLS certification (American Heart Association or Red Cross, including grace period options)
  • BLS certification (American Heart Association or Red Cross, including grace period options)
  • Registered Nurse Compact License or Florida RN License
  • One (1) year of nursing experience required
  • Department-specific credentials:
    • ONCC Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider Certificate required for RNs administering chemotherapy
    • APHON Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider card required within 12 months of hire for pediatric oncology RNs
    • ACLS required for ICU, ED, PACU, Endo, Tele, OB, MHN Pre-Op, and Specialty Procedural areas
    • PALS required for Pediatric areas (except NICU); 30 days to obtain if coming from a non-pediatric background
    • NRP certification required for NICU; 30 days to obtain if coming from a non-NICU background
    • Certification in Fetal Monitoring (Intermediate or Advanced) through National Credential Center or AWOHNN required for L&D RNs prior to completion of orientation
  • RN Fellowship Program requires one (1) year of independent RN practice (excluding orientation)
  • Newly licensed RNs have six (6) months to obtain ACLS and/or PALS

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Exposure to biohazardous waste, biological hazards (respiratory/skin/ingestion), blood/bodily fluids, communicable diseases/pathogens, hazardous chemicals/medications, needles/sharp objects, and cytotoxic chemicals
  • Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, lifting/carrying patients (35+ lbs), pushing/pulling (0-75+ lbs non-patient), standing, walking, and squatting
  • Moderate exposure to dust, gas/vapors/fumes, moving mechanical parts, potential electric shock, potential for physical assault, wet/slippery surfaces, and unprotected heights (limited)
  • Requires critical thinking, effective communication, decisive judgment, and ability to work with minimal supervision in a stressful environment
  • Visual and hearing acuity, keyboard entry, and repetitive hand/arm movement required
