Essential Duties
- Aid the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities.
- Develop and maintain written policies and procedures for the nursing service department.
- Maintain current reference material at nurses’ stations.
- Recommend written material to assist the nursing service department.
- Maintain the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
- Evaluate nursing service personnel compliance with procedures.
- Report to the Director as necessary.
- Review and update department policies and procedures.
- Coordinate nursing services with other resident services.
- Evaluate nursing service personnel compliance with job descriptions.
- Participate in the quality assurance program.
- Prepare and present reports to facility surveys.
- Review and update resident discharge plans.
- Plan the nursing services portion of the resident’s discharge plan.
- Meet with nursing staff to plan services and activities.
- Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as needed.
- Complete accident/incident reports.
- Interpret department policies and procedures.
- Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms.
- Ensure compliance with privacy and security policies.
- Report unauthorized attempts to access facility information.
Committee Functions
- Attend various committee meetings.
- Prepare and submit written and/or oral reports of nursing service programs and activities.
- Provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee.
- Develop the agenda for Care Plan Committee meetings.
- Review and update discharge plans.
- Implement recommendations from established committees.
Personnel Functions
- Ensure sufficient nursing and support staff are available.
- Develop work assignments and delegate responsibilities.
- Monitor absenteeism and report problem areas.
- Ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
- Review and evaluate department work force.
- Administer disciplinary actions fairly.
Nursing Care Functions
- Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions.
- Greet newly admitted residents.
- Escort newly admitted residents to their rooms.
- Make rounds with physicians as necessary.
- Consult with residents, families, and physicians about care plans.
- Notify the Director of changes in resident conditions.
- Visit residents daily to observe and evaluate their status.
- Ensure direct nursing care is provided by qualified personnel.
- Start IVs, collect specimens, take vital signs, etc.
- Admit, transfer, and discharge residents.
- Report problem areas to the Director.
- Assist in developing and implementing corrective action.
- Keep the Director informed of resident status.
- Monitor seriously ill residents.
- Authorize the use of restraints.
- Ensure proper medication administration and storage.
- Inspect treatment areas for cleanliness.
- Check on residents unable to call for help.
- Assist in arranging transportation for discharged residents.
- Inform family members of resident deaths.
- Call funeral homes as requested.
Staff Development
- Develop and conduct in-service training classes.
- Plan and implement annual facility in-service training programs.
- Supervise nurse aide trainees.
- Attend and participate in continuing education programs.
Safety and Sanitation
- Develop safety standards for the nursing service department.
- Evaluate and classify job-related tasks involving potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
- Train personnel on appropriate procedures for handling personal protective equipment.
- Monitor personnel compliance with safety regulations.
