Essential Duties

  • Aid the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities.
  • Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating written policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that reference material at the nurses’ stations is current.
  • Recommend written material to assist the nursing service department.
  • Maintain the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
  • Evaluate and recommend revisions to the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
  • Coordinate nursing services with other resident services.
  • Evaluate nursing service personnel compliance with job descriptions.
  • Participate in facility surveys.
  • Review and update resident discharge plans.
  • Plan the nursing services portion of the resident’s discharge plan.
  • Meet with nursing staff to plan services, programs, and activities.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required.
  • Complete accident/incident reports as necessary.
  • Interpret department policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies.
  • Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc.
  • Ensure a sufficient number of licensed nurses, nursing assistants, and nurse aides are available.
  • Delegate administrative authority to Charge Nurses.
  • Enroll nursing assistants in approved training programs.
  • Monitor nursing staff performance and report problem areas to the Director.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and procedures, including dress codes.
  • Review and address complaints and grievances.
  • Create a warm and positive environment for residents.
  • Assist in identifying and correcting problem areas.
  • Develop and maintain a good working relationship with inter-departmental personnel.
  • Report occupational exposures and suspected incidents of fraud.
  • Ensure proper use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
  • Monitor safety regulations and personnel compliance.

Committee Functions

  • Attend various facility committee meetings.
  • Prepare and present written and/or oral reports of nursing service programs and activities.
  • Provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee.
  • Develop the agenda for Care Plan Committee meetings.
  • Review and update discharge plans as required.
  • Implement recommendations from established committees.

Nursing Care Functions

  • Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions and prepare rooms.
  • Greet newly admitted residents and escort them to their rooms.
  • Make rounds with physicians as necessary.
  • Inform the Director of delayed physician visits.
  • Consult with residents, families, and physicians regarding care plans.
  • Notify the attending physician and next-of-kin of resident condition changes.
  • Visit residents daily to assess their physical and emotional status.
  • Ensure direct nursing care is provided by licensed nurses, certified nursing assistants, and/or nurse aides.
  • Review nurses' notes for accuracy and compliance.
  • Provide direct nursing care as needed.
  • Administer IVs, collect specimens, take vital signs, etc.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as necessary.
  • Report problem areas to the Director.
  • Assist in developing and implementing corrective actions.
  • Keep the Director informed of resident status.
  • Monitor seriously ill residents.
  • Authorize the use of restraints.
  • Evaluate and administer medications and supplies.
  • Inspect treatment areas for cleanliness and safety.
  • Check on residents unable to call for help.
  • Assist in arranging transportation for discharged residents.
  • Inform family members of resident deaths and contact funeral homes.

Staff Development

  • Develop, plan, conduct, and schedule in-service training classes.
  • Assist the In-service Director/Educator in developing annual facility in-service training programs.
  • Assist the Director in planning clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
  • Attend and participate in continuing education programs.

Safety and Sanitation

  • Develop safety standards for the nursing service department.
  • Evaluate and classify routine and job-related tasks involving potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
  • Ensure personnel receive appropriate in-service training.
  • Monitor personnel compliance with safety regulations.
  • Ensure availability and proper use of personal protective equipment.
