Administrative Functions
- Aid the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities.
- Develop, maintain, and update written policies and procedures for the nursing service department.
- Maintain and update reference material at nurses' stations to ensure it is current.
- Recommend written material to assist the nursing service department in meeting its needs.
- Maintain the Nursing Service Procedures Manual to reflect current nursing procedures.
- Evaluate and recommend revisions to the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
- Collaborate with other departments to coordinate nursing services and ensure continuity of care.
- Evaluate nursing service personnel against job descriptions.
- Participate in the quality assurance program for the nursing service department.
- Prepare and present reports to the Administrator or Director of Nursing Services during facility surveys.
- Review and update resident discharge plans as needed.
- Assist in planning the nursing services portion of the resident's discharge plan.
- Meet with nursing staff and support personnel to plan department services, programs, and activities.
- Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required.
- Complete accident/incident reports as necessary.
- Interpret department policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies as required.
- Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc., as necessary.
- Ensure confidentiality of resident information and report any violations to the Administrator.
- Report any unauthorized attempts to access facility information systems.
Committee Functions
- Attend various facility committees (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Quality Assessment, etc.) as required.
- Prepare and present written and/or oral reports of nursing service programs and activities to committee meetings.
- Provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee as requested.
- Develop the agenda for Care Plan Committee meetings as necessary.
- Review and update discharge plans and make them available to the Care Plan Committee as required.
- Implement recommendations from established committees as instructed by the Director.
Nursing Care Functions
- Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions and prepare rooms accordingly.
- Greet newly admitted residents and escort them to their rooms.
- Make rounds with physicians as necessary.
- Inform the Director when physician visits are not made in a timely manner.
- Consult with residents, families, and physicians in planning their care.
- Notify the Director of changes in residents' conditions.
- Visit residents daily to observe and evaluate their physical and emotional status.
- Evaluate direct nursing care provided by licensed nurses, certified nursing assistants, and nurse aides.
- Monitor nurses' notes for completeness and accuracy.
- Provide direct nursing care as necessary.
- Administer IVs, collect specimens, take vital signs, and authorize the use of restraints.
- Evaluate medication administration and storage practices.
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of nursing service work areas and resident care rooms.
- Ensure proper handwashing and hand hygiene among nursing service personnel.
- Conduct fire safety and disaster preparedness drills in a safe and professional manner.
Staff Development
- Develop and conduct in-service training classes to educate nursing service personnel.
- Plan and supervise clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
- Attend and participate in continuing education programs to stay updated on professional developments.
Safety and Sanitation
- Assist the Safety Officer in developing safety standards for the nursing service department.
- Identify and classify tasks involving potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
- Ensure personnel receive appropriate in-service training before performing tasks involving exposure.
- Monitor personnel to ensure they follow safety regulations and use personal protective equipment correctly.
- Ensure nursing service personnel comply with established policies and procedures.
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of nursing service work areas and resident care rooms.
- Ensure proper handwashing and hand hygiene among nursing service personnel.
- Conduct fire safety and disaster preparedness drills in a safe and professional manner.
