Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepares the operating room with necessary instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies before each procedure.
- Affirms patient conditions, reviews medical histories, and verifies surgical consents prior to surgery.
- Maintains a sterile field throughout surgical procedures, adhering to strict aseptic techniques.
- Aids surgeons and surgical teams by anticipating needs, passing instruments, and managing equipment.
- Maintains patient vital signs, physiological responses, and overall status during surgery, promptly reporting any changes.
- Documents all nursing care, interventions, and patient responses accurately and thoroughly.
- Administers and manages medications as prescribed, ensuring patient safety and proper dosage.
- Collaborates effectively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other surgical team members to ensure coordinated care.
- Educates patients and their families about pre-operative and post-operative care instructions.
- Responds to emergency situations with speed and precision, maintaining a calm and controlled environment.
- Ensures proper handling and labeling of specimens.
- Participates in debriefings and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and surgical outcomes.
Required Qualifications
- Holds an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited institution.
- Possesses a current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
- Maintains current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Brings a minimum of 2 years of recent experience as a Registered Nurse in an Operating Room setting.
- Demonstrates experience with a variety of surgical specialties and procedures.
- Applies a comprehensive understanding of surgical anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
- Exhibits strong knowledge of aseptic techniques, infection control, and surgical safety protocols.
- Operates and troubleshoots various operating room equipment and technologies.
- Possesses exceptional critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills under pressure.
- Communicates clearly and effectively with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Manages time efficiently and prioritizes tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Shows a strong commitment to patient advocacy and ethical nursing practice.
Preferred Qualifications
- Holds Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) certification.
- Maintains current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Possesses experience in specific surgical subspecialties such as orthopedics, neurosurgery, or cardiovascular surgery.
Physical Requirements/Work Conditions
- Stands and walks for extended periods throughout the shift.
- Lifts, positions, and transfers patients, often requiring assistance.
- Works in a fast-paced, high-stress, and sometimes unpredictable environment.
- Handles and manipulates medical instruments and equipment with dexterity.
- Experiences exposure to bloodborne pathogens, infectious diseases, and hazardous materials, following strict safety protocols.
- Wears personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
