Administrative Functions
- Aid the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities.
- Develop, maintain, and update written policies and procedures for the nursing service department.
- Maintain current reference material at nurses' stations.
- Recommend written material to assist the nursing service department.
- Maintain the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
- Evaluate and recommend revisions to the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
- Coordinate nursing services with other resident services.
- Evaluate nursing service personnel against job descriptions.
- Participate in the quality assurance program for the nursing service department.
- Prepare and present reports to the Administrator or Director of Nursing Services.
- Review and update resident discharge plans.
- Assist in planning the nursing services portion of the resident's discharge plan.
- Meet with nursing staff to plan services, programs, and activities.
- Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as necessary.
- Complete accident/incident reports as needed.
- Interpret departmental policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies.
- Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc.
- Avoid disclosing assigned user ID codes and passwords.
- Avoid disclosing resident's protected health information.
- Report any unauthorized attempts to access facility's information system.
Committee Functions
- Attend various facility committees (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Quality Assessment, etc.) as required.
- Prepare written and/or oral reports of nursing service programs and activities for submission to such committees.
- Provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee.
- Develop the agenda for Care Plan Committee meetings.
- Review and update resident discharge plans as required.
- Implement recommendations from established committees.
Nursing Care Functions
- Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions and their room assignments.
- Greet newly admitted residents and escort them to their rooms.
- Make rounds with physicians as necessary.
- Inform the Director when physician visits are not made in a timely manner.
- Consult with residents, families, and physicians in planning care.
- Notify the attending physician and next of kin of changes in resident's condition.
- Visit residents daily to observe and evaluate their physical and emotional status.
- Evaluate direct nursing care provided by licensed nurses, certified nursing assistants, and nurse aides.
- Review nurses' notes for accuracy and compliance.
- Provide direct nursing care as necessary.
- Administer and monitor medications and treatments.
- Inspect treatment areas for cleanliness and safety.
- Monitor residents who are unable to call for help.
- Assist in developing and implementing corrective action.
- Report problem areas to the Director.
Staff Development
- Develop, plan, conduct, and schedule in-service training classes.
- Develop annual facility in-service training programs.
- Plan clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
- Attend and participate in continuing education programs.
Safety and Sanitation
- Develop safety standards for the nursing service department.
- Evaluate and classify routine and job-related functions for potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
- Ensure personal protective equipment is available and used appropriately.
- Monitor personnel to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of nursing service work areas and resident care rooms.
- Maintain proper handwashing and hand hygiene procedures.
- Conduct fire safety and disaster preparedness drills.
