About the Role
The Nurse Manager performs line management functions for the assigned area, demonstrating responsibility for the overall fiscal management of the department. This role conducts and manages performance improvement activities, develops and monitors departmental policies and procedures, and acts as a Chief Retention Officer while performing human resource functions. The Nurse Manager provides leadership aligned with Peake of Care and Relationship-Based Care principles, leading unit culture and functions in keeping with the organizational and nursing mission, vision, and values.
All team members are expected to focus on patient needs, providing quality care and service, efficient use of resources, and contributing to the success of the entire team. Every team member shall prioritize the patient and team above individual needs, constantly seeking better ways to care for patients and enhance resource efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Financial Management
- Prepares yearly operating and capital budgets based on departmental initiatives, projected volumes, and benchmarked staffing standards.
- Controls financial performance and productivity to meet budget.
- Manages personnel scheduling according to budget, volume, and patient acuity.
- Identifies and explains monthly budget variances.
- Develops and implements cost reduction and revenue initiatives.
- Monitors department payroll to ensure adherence to policies and eliminates unnecessary overtime.
- Patient Care Management
- Creates a culture of service excellence to ensure patient and family satisfaction and optimal patient outcomes.
- Utilizes patient rounding to ensure care standards are met and analyzes patient care needs to guide staffing decisions.
- Develops, implements, and monitors unit quality improvement plans.
- Establishes collaborative relationships with physicians, other disciplines, and leaders to achieve clinical practice outcomes.
- Recommends and implements changes in clinical practice or processes based on clinical findings, multidisciplinary recommendations, and evidence-based practice.
- Creates and maintains an environment that promotes patient and staff safety.
- Maintains nursing care and unit operations in keeping with CRH, HFAP, regulatory, and professional nursing standards, policies, and procedures.
- Identifies, documents, and submits follow-up for patient complaints and/or safety events.
- Provides emotional and situational support for peers and nursing staff.
- Supports timely and effective patient throughput and other initiatives that enhance the patient's hospital experience.
- Human Resource Management
- Manages human resource functions according to organizational policy and procedure.
- Recruits, selects, and retains qualified staff whose performance and values align with team goals.

- Supervisory Responsibilities
- Reports to: Director of Nursing for assigned units.
- Supervises: Unit staff.
- Responsibilities: Management of unit performance and personnel.

Qualifications
- Education and Experience
- Minimum Required Education: BSN degree.
- Minimum Experience: 2+ years in a specialized area with Charge Nurse or equivalent experience.
- Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Must be licensed to work as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia or a compact state.
- Must have clinical certification appropriate for the care area and/or nurse leader/executive certification or obtain within one year of hire.
- Must maintain BLS. Other certifications as required for nurses working in the assigned clinical area.
