Job Description

The Registered Nurse (Hospital-Based) at UofL Health provides nursing care to patients, utilizing the nursing process and nursing practice standards. Key functions include conducting comprehensive assessments, administering medications safely, planning and implementing care, and evaluating outcomes. This role also involves advocating for patients and families, preparing them for discharge, and maintaining professional competency through ongoing education.

Essential Functions

• Conducts systematic, continuous, and comprehensive assessments of patient health status to ensure safety and collaborate with the healthcare team.
• Administers medications according to licensure authority, assesses and reassesses their effects, and documents administration accurately.
• Plans care using current scientific knowledge, theory, and care standards, and incorporates data from the multi-disciplinary care team into the plan of care.
• Identifies and prioritizes patient problems, reflecting sensitivity to age, learning needs, and cultural background, and implements nursing care interventions to meet patient needs.
• Demonstrates competent skills, appropriate clinical judgment, and chain of command to promote patient safety and reach planned care goals.
• Assesses, conducts, and evaluates the outcomes of patient and family teaching, ensuring continuity and appropriate patient teaching.
• Evaluates care regularly and collaborates with the care team to revise the plan of care and prevent or intervene with potential adverse events.
• Serves as an advocate for the patient and family, demonstrating respect for their rights, responsibilities, and preferences, and obtaining feedback to promote positive patient satisfaction outcomes.
• Collaborates with unlicensed assistive healthcare providers, ensuring safe patient care delivery.
• Communicates constructively using core behavioral standards, identifies and resolves clinical and interdepartmental problems, and gives and receives peer review and feedback.
• Participates in evidence-based practice activities and complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality.
• Performs duties in a cost-effective manner, avoiding waste without compromising quality of care and service.

• Demonstrates professional conduct and appearance and is accountable for actions and outcomes.
• Orients new members of the healthcare team and supervises students in the performance of assigned duties.
• Maintains professional competency through continuing education, ongoing competency demonstration, licensure, and professional activities.
• Participates in evidence-based practice activities and discusses outcomes of care with colleagues, remaining up-to-date with compliance, regulatory, and accreditation standards.
• Acts as a collaborative member of the healthcare team, actively participating in resolving conflicts appropriately on behalf of the care team and patients.
• Maintains compliance with all company policies, procedures, and standards of conduct.

Education & Experience

• Ancillary requirements: Associate’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program (required); BSN program completion within one year of hire (required).
• Experience: Two years of hospital patient care experience (preferred); participation in the Nurse Residency program and successful completion of all activities (required).
• Licenses: Current KY RN licensure or compact license with privileges to work in Kentucky (required).
• Certifications: Basic Life Saving (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (required); Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and/or Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (may be required for specific clinical areas).
