About the Role
The Nurse Manager serves as a role model, clinical and administrative consultant for Nursing and ancillary staff. Responsible for clinical and administrative decisions in the division in collaboration with or in the absence of the Director. Manages personnel, staffing, scheduling, and budget to ensure high-quality patient care and operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Manages the provision of adequate and competent staffing to meet patient care needs.
- Evaluates effectiveness of care and addresses issues affecting desired patient outcomes.
- Ensures age and culturally appropriate care is provided, following Standard Precautions.
- Communicates effectively with healthcare teams, customers, and stakeholders.
- Maintains departmental activities within budget and implements cost-reduction initiatives.
- Ensures compliance with Hospital and HCA policies, including regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrates clinical competence and assumes responsibility for professional growth.
- Participates in Hospital and community activities to promote the nursing profession.
- Collaborates with colleagues on practice issues and participates in Management Development curriculum.
- Develops and consults on department orientation, competency activities, and preceptor programs.
- Reviews, edits, and approves staff payroll.
- Participates in annual competency evaluations and employee/patient rounding.
- Ensures staff participation in unit and hospital-wide committees.
- Monitors orientee performance and provides constructive feedback.
- Mentors, counsels, and coaches staff as needed.
- Provides opportunities for staff to engage in shared governance.
- Assists staff in delivering patient care and services as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- BSN required; Master’s degree in a related field or active pursuit of an advanced degree preferred.
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or a compact state.
- BLS certification required.
- Certification in area of specialty or nursing leadership preferred.
