About the Role

The Nurse Manager serves as a role model, clinically and administratively, and acts as a clinical consultant for Nursing and ancillary staff. The Nurse Manager is responsible for clinical and administrative decisions in the division in collaboration with or in the absence of the Director.

Responsibilities

  • Manages personnel in the accomplishment of designated goals and the provision of nursing care and services.
  • Manages the provision of adequate and competent staffing.
  • Manages the daily schedule efficiently to ensure all decisions, actions, and team performance meet the needs of key customers and stakeholders.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of care in producing desired patient outcomes and addresses any issues affecting those outcomes.
  • Ensures that age and culturally appropriate care is given.
  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
  • Assists staff to achieve their potential as members of an effective team through innovative management practices.
  • Communicates effectively, both written and verbally, with all members of the Healthcare Team, customers, and key stakeholders.
  • Maintains departmental activities within budget and suggests/implements cost-reduction activities.
  • Ensures department compliance with Hospital and HCA policies and procedures, including all regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrates clinical competence in the unit nurse role.
  • Assumes responsibility for own growth as a professional, including participation in professional organizations, attending seminars, and engaging in formal educational activities.
  • Actively participates in Hospital and community activities to advance and market the role of the nurse for recruitment and staff retention.
  • Collaborates and confers with area colleagues regarding practice issues.
  • Participates in Management Development curriculum.
  • Develops, consults on, and approves department orientation and competency development activities.
  • Develops preceptors in each department.
  • Reviews, edits, and approves staff payroll.
  • Participates in the annual Competency process and the Evaluation Process.
  • Participates in purposeful Employee and Patient Rounding.
  • Assumes shared responsibility for department audits and daily Plus Stats.
  • Ensures staff are active participants in unit and hospital-wide committees.
  • Monitors orientee performance and practice, along with preceptors, and initiates action to correct or develop orientees.
  • Provides staff with honest and constructive feedback regarding their performance and growth on an ongoing basis.
  • Provides mentoring, counseling, and coaching for staff as needed.
  • Provides opportunities for staff to participate in departmental shared governance.
  • Assists staff in providing patient care and services as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • One year of recent Critical Care experience required.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) required.
  • BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) required; Master's Degree in a related field or actively pursuing an advanced degree is preferred.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia or a compact state license.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) required.
  • Certification in area of specialty or nursing leadership is required.
