Job Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) coordinates patient care delivery by the health care team using the nursing process. They assess patients, identify nursing diagnoses, develop and implement individualized plans of care, and evaluate patient responses. The RN also promotes safe passage for patients by managing their healthcare environment and assisting them in transitioning through healthcare encounters.

Essential Functions of the Role

  • Clinical Judgment: Conducts accurate clinical assessments, prioritizes patient and family needs, and modifies the nursing plan of care based on outcomes.

  • Clinical Inquiry: Evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice, participates in quality/performance improvement initiatives, and supports evidence-based practice changes.

  • Caring Practices: Creates a compassionate, supportive, safe, and therapeutic environment; develops therapeutic relationships with patients and families; manages emotional and physical pain to promote comfort and healing.

  • Response to Diversity: Recognizes, appreciates, and incorporates patient and family differences into an individualized plan of care.

  • Advocacy and Moral Agency: Preserves and protects patient and family confidentiality, autonomy, dignity, and rights; identifies and helps resolve ethical and clinical concerns.

  • Facilitation of Learning: Facilitates learning for patients, families, staff, and other members of the health care team, integrating education throughout the continuum of care.

  • Collaboration: Works collaboratively and interdependently with colleagues and community to develop and implement an integrated plan of care; delegates tasks and care to appropriate staff and ensures timely follow-up.

  • Systems Thinking: Uses strategies and available resources for problem-solving; recognizes resource limitations and considers safety, effectiveness, and efficiency in planning and delivering patient care.

  • Professionalism: Improves nursing practice and the work environment through participation in shared governance and decision-making processes; commits to ongoing professional growth through continuing education and involvement in professional organizations.

Knowledge and Understanding

  • Nursing and patient care standards and procedures.

  • Laws, rules, and regulations; standards and guidelines of certifying and accrediting bodies; hospital and department/unit standards, protocols, policies, and procedures.

  • Medical terminology; principles and practices of health promotion, risk reduction, illness and disease prevention and management; medications and their effects; medical and professional nursing ethics and patient privacy rights.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS).

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited program in Nursing.

  • 2 years of experience.

  • Registered Nurse (RN) certification.
