About the role

Under general supervision, you will provide professional nursing care for patients, adhering to national and company standards and specialty regulations. You will demonstrate knowledge of physiological, psychological, and developmental differences in patient populations, including late adolescence, adulthood, middle age, and the elderly. Collaboration with the interdisciplinary team ensures assessment and therapeutic management of patient and family needs. You will also support and adhere to the US Oncology Compliance Program, including the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.

Responsibilities

• Plan, implement, coordinate, evaluate, and promote continuity of care consistent with established standards and practices.
• Assess health status by interviewing patients regarding current status and medical history.
• Collect and record nursing assessments and interventions.
• Review and report results of health status assessments, physical examinations, laboratory data, radiographic data, and psychosocial assessments to providers.
• Assess patient and family needs, providing teaching and instructional materials as well as psychosocial support.
• Maintain patient confidentiality.
• Prepare and administer therapies under physician direction and supervision.
• Administer medications and blood products using correct dosage, route, time, and technique.
• Ensure pre-authorization and appropriate consent forms are obtained prior to administering therapies.
• Facilitate dose modification by assessing patients, labs, protocols, and consulting physicians regarding dosage adjustments, symptom management, and problems.
• Perform venipuncture, access implanted ports, and maintain central line catheter devices.
• Maintain accurate documentation of patient care and treatments provided.
• Apply knowledge of reimbursement procedures and charge capture.
• Maintain the work environment by restocking supplies as needed and following OSHA guidelines for handling cytotoxic agents, biohazardous waste, and other potentially infectious materials.
• Maintain disinfection protocols and equipment according to quality control standards.
• Manage patient medication refill requests and record information in patient charts.
• Assist physicians with exams and procedures, ensuring efficient patient flow.
• Facilitate and schedule consultations, tests, referrals, and future appointments.
• Triage patient phone calls and document relevant information in patient charts.
• Coordinate communication between patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team, including services related to patient care.
• Assist patients in locating community resources.
• Collaborate with clinical research and act as a resource for LPN/LVNs and medical assistants.
• Provide nursing coverage for satellite offices as needed.
• Serve as a mentor or preceptor and guide less experienced nurses.
• Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge of oncology nursing through ongoing education.

Infusion RN Specific Responsibilities

• Program portable infusion pumps for continuous drug delivery and instruct patients or caregivers on pump use at home.
• Demonstrate knowledge of ambulatory infusion pump use, maintenance, cleaning, and proper documentation.

Requirements

• Graduate from an accredited professional nursing education program (BSN preferred).
• Active RN state license and current registration with the State Board of Nursing in the practicing state.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• 3–5 years of nursing experience, with at least one year in oncology preferred.
• Oncology certification and Chemotherapy Immunotherapy provider card preferred.

Skills

• Specialized knowledge in oncology nursing.
• Ability to assess and manage patient and family needs, including teaching and psychosocial support.
• Proficiency in administering medications, therapies, and blood products.
• Experience with venipuncture, implanted ports, and central line maintenance.
• Strong documentation and charge capture skills.
• Ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and mentor less experienced staff.

Working Conditions

• Possible exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medical preparations, and other conditions common in an oncology/hematology clinic.
• Requires full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
• Requires standing and walking for extensive periods.
• Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 lbs.
• Requires corrected vision and hearing within normal range.

Pay

The general pay scale for this position is $74,979–$101,199 per year. The actual hiring rate depends on factors such as prior work experience, education, job responsibilities, location, and work performance.
