The RN's practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served. The RN establishes a care plan or contributes to an existing plan, teaches patients and their families how to manage illnesses or injuries, and provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides regarding patient care.

Responsibilities

• Record patients' medical history and symptoms, perform diagnostic tests, analyze results, operate medical equipment, administer treatment and medications, and assist with patient follow-up and rehabilitation.
• Administer medication, including careful checking of dosages and avoiding interactions; start, maintain, and discontinue intravenous (IV) lines for fluid, medication, blood, and blood products.
• Administer therapies and treatments, observe the patient and record those observations, and consult with physicians and other healthcare clinicians.
• Teach patients and their families about post-treatment and home care needs, including diet, nutrition, exercise programs, and self-administration of medication and therapy.
• Provide direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides regarding patient care and delegate when appropriate.
• Support efforts to advance clinical knowledge and skills, precept new hire staff and students, and assist them in completing competency skills.
• Enhance knowledge in nursing management and care of patient problems and conditions as required.
• Improve patient experience, clinical outcomes, and promote a healthy work environment.
• Collect health data systematically, prioritize data collection based on the patient’s immediate condition, and involve the family.
• Analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses and develop, implement, evaluate, and revise an appropriate patient plan of care that is family-centered, developmentally and age-appropriate, and culturally relevant.
• Identify expected outcomes individualized to the patient and their specific health problems.
• Develop and implement plans of care that reflect current nursing practice, provide continuity of care, and are evidence-based.
• Initiate treatments, medications, emergency, and resuscitative measures based on standing orders, policies, and procedures.
• Provide nursing care to meet physical, emotional, spiritual, and social-cultural needs using a family-centered approach.
• Evaluate the patient’s progress toward attainment of outcomes and document observations, interventions, and monitoring data.
• Provide ongoing evaluation of the quality and effectiveness of the care plan to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
• Evaluate one’s own nursing practice in relation to professional standards, statutes, and regulations.
• Integrate ethical principles in all aspects of practice and enhance knowledge of cultural and diversity needs for specific populations.
• Collaborate with others in nursing professional development and interact with peers and other healthcare providers to foster quality practice.
• Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care delivery.
• Develop and evaluate evidence-based standards of care for patients and identify changes in nursing practice using an evidence-based approach.
• Participate in and use evidence-based research to improve nursing practice and patient outcomes.
• Consider factors related to safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning and delivering patient care.

All RN staff who have direct responsibility for the care of stroke patients must have knowledge of:

• Stroke symptoms and warning signs
• Protocols and pathways used to identify, evaluate, and manage stroke patients
• NIHSS Stroke Alert activation and protocol
• Stroke quality indicators
• Available stroke patient education materials and community resources
• Educational requirements
• Stroke Center website resources

Requirements

• More than 10 months of med-surg or acute specialty setting experience
• 1 year RN experience for all Float Positions
• Minimum 2 years of experience in ICU

Qualifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
• Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Arizona or Compact State Licensure upon hire
• Unit-specific certification as required by specialty area
• National certification for unit-specific patient population (Preferred)

Education

• Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) – Preferred
• All Diploma and ADN hires must complete BSN within 60 months of hire date OR have 10 years of Registered Nurse Experience (direct or indirect)
• Associate's Degree or Diploma in Nursing
• Graduate from an accredited NLN/CCNE institution

All staff who have direct responsibility for the care of stroke patients must meet stroke-specific education requirements prior to start.
