About the role

The Inpatient Nursing Shift House Supervisor is responsible for nursing activities during their shift, serving as an administrative and clinical resource for hospital and nursing administration. This role collaborates with nurse managers and charge nurses to plan staffing, hires and trains new employees, conducts performance appraisals, and handles disciplinary actions in consultation with HR. The House Supervisor also leads quality of care and safety initiatives, supports evidence-based practice, and ensures compliance with regulatory standards.

Must be available to work at all UC San Diego Health locations, including Hillcrest, La Jolla, and East Campus.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as administrative and clinical resource for hospital and nursing administration during assigned shift.
  • Provide clinical support for all areas of inpatient nursing.
  • Collaborate with nurse managers and charge nurses to plan on-shift and incoming shift staffing.
  • Hire, screen, and interview candidates for employment.
  • Prepare and conduct annual performance appraisals for staff.
  • Train and assign work to new and existing employees.
  • Recommend merit increases and classification reviews.
  • Perform disciplinary actions, up to and including dismissal, in consultation with HR/LR.
  • Represent the department in grievance hearings, administrative reviews, or arbitration.
  • Lead quality of care and safety initiatives, including adherence to the ANA code of ethics.
  • Support and promote evidence-based practice teams.
  • Identify and direct data collection for nursing-sensitive indicators at the unit level.
  • Promote customer service improvement in all patient, family, and staff interactions.
  • Ensure compliance with licensure and annual mandated regulatory competencies.

Requirements

  • BSN required; MSN preferred.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the state of California.
  • Current BART/ART or BLS/CPR and/or ACLS certifications at time of hire, with commitment to obtain BART within six (6) months.
  • Five (5+) or more years of relevant experience, including at least three (3) years of recent working RN experience in an acute care environment.
  • Recent nursing supervisory and/or management experience.
  • Proven hospital management skills with progressive expertise in patient care services.
  • Knowledge of disaster incident management, sentinel events, and critical problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of The Joint Commission (TJC) accreditation regulations.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills for managing complex information and responsibilities.
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced environment with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated empathy and kindness in interactions with staff and patients.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to influence all levels of staff, physicians, patients, and external constituents.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Clinical area specialty certification or Nursing Administration Certification.
  • Recent ED, ICU, and/or NP experience.
  • Lean Six Sigma training.
  • Recent or current RN experience at UC San Diego Health.

Special Conditions

  • Must be able to work various hours, days, shifts, on-call, and at multiple locations based on the 24-hour Medical Center’s business needs.
  • Must be available to work overtime as needed.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Life-support certifications (BLS, NRP, ACLS, etc.) must include hands-on practice and in-person skills assessment; online-only certification is not acceptable.

Pay

Hiring pay scale: $87.50 - $99.00 per hour.

Annual full pay range: $136,600 - $267,600 (prorated if appointment percentage is less than 100%). Hourly equivalent: $65.42 - $128.16.

Factors determining compensation include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure, certifications, and organizational needs.

Schedule

  • Per Diem appointment at 20% appointment percentage.
  • 12-hour rotating shifts, Sunday through Saturday.
