About the role

Haven Behavioral Hospital of Philadelphia is a 42-bed acute-care Joint Commission Accredited psychiatric hospital offering a full continuum of care for older adults with mental health needs. The Nurse Supervisor provides supervision of all patient care areas, serves as the managerial and clinical link between the Director of Nursing/Nurse Manager and department staff, and promotes the hospital’s mission, vision, and values.

Responsibilities

• Assess patient care requirements on each unit by making rounds throughout all areas of the hospital (per departmental need/activity)
• Ensure departmental staffing plans are implemented appropriately
• Serve as a clinical resource to staff for solving problems and efficiently utilizing resources
• Provide immediate follow-up, documentation, and communication of incidents to the appropriate manager and director
• Respond to emergency situations and assist as necessary
• Act as a resource in identifying and solving administrative/operational problems; contact external departments for assistance as needed
• Interpret and ensure adherence to hospital and nursing philosophy, policies, and procedures
• Report significant incidents and problems to the administrator-on-call or DON/Nurse Manager (e.g., unusual patient/family concerns, physician issues, major damage, security problems, media events, disasters, legal matters, regulatory calls, safety issues)
• Provide ongoing timely feedback (verbal and written) to staff on performance in collaboration with DON/Nurse Manager
• Assist with nursing personnel performance evaluations and identify staff needs for continuing education
• Provide education, remediation, and skills competency assessment as directed
• Monitor documentation for adherence to rules and regulations and ensure environment of care requirements are met (quality logs, infection control practices, etc.)
• Utilize the nursing process: assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized plans of care and treatment modalities
• Identify expected outcomes individualized to the client including discharge planning; evaluate effectiveness of interventions; conduct ongoing assessment from admission to discharge
• Initiate medical/psychiatric crisis intervention to stabilize and ensure patient well-being
• Provide patient teaching on identified learning needs; facilitate family/significant other education
• Demonstrate knowledge of psychiatric disorders and implement individualized nursing interventions
• Apply appropriate interventions to progress patients toward wellness and address maintenance of wellness
• Provide structure and maintain a therapeutic milieu in collaboration with patients and other providers
• Administer medications as prescribed; provide education on medications; recognize signs and symptoms of adverse drug reactions
• Review, revise, and update medical records within facility guidelines and timeframes
• Transcribe and implement physician orders according to facility policy; document care, progress, and responses accurately and concisely
• Follow up on client care responsibilities; communicate incomplete assignments and current client needs to staff to ensure continuity of care

Requirements

• Minimum Associate’s Degree in Nursing
• Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Pennsylvania
• Minimum of 3 years of Registered Nursing experience
• Psychiatric nursing experience required

• Ability to work under high stress and assess potential for patient escalation
• Capacity to determine appropriate course of action in complex situations
• Effective oral and written communication skills with internal and external customers
• Highly organized with sensitivity to serving culturally diverse and special needs populations (chronically mentally ill, geriatric, co-occurring disorders)
• Knowledge of normal physical and emotional development
• Exhibits critical thinking abilities and applies them for continuous improvement of patient care
• Self-confident and able to think conceptually in leading and directing others
• Professional demeanor when handling difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others
• Must successfully complete CPR certification and an Oceans-approved behavioral health de-escalation program

Work Environment

Subject to frequent interruptions and high-paced, stressful conditions requiring mental and physical coping. May involve disagreeable odors, sights, and/or unpredictable patient behavior. Spends approximately 90% or more of time inside a building offering protection from weather but not necessarily from temperature changes.

Pay

$15,000 hiring bonus

Schedule

Full-time, day shift: 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., bi-weekly schedule alternating between 3 twelve-hour shifts one week and 4 twelve-hour shifts the following week with end-of-week rotation.
