RN, House Supervisor/Critical Care Nurse Clinician - East Hospital - Full-time - 2Mid/1Night shift

Erlanger Medical Center seeks a highly skilled registered professional nurse to provide direct and/or indirect care for patients, serving as a clinical resource to nursing, medical, and ancillary staff.

About the Role

The Critical Care Nurse Clinician provides clinical expertise and continuity of care for critically ill and injured patients in a regional academic Level 1 Trauma Center. This position collaborates with physicians to organize care delivery and facilitate patient flow through the system. The role involves responding to in-house codes, Rapid Response Alerts, Code Strokes, and Code STEMIs, as well as assisting with transferring critically ill patients to the ICU. The clinician rapidly triages patients, coordinates with physicians on care plans, and promotes evidence-based practice at the bedside. Additional responsibilities include leading department projects, participating in process improvement, and contributing to the emergency department's goals and objectives.

The role requires flexibility to take on multiple functions, including ICU nurse, ED nurse, floor nurse, patient representative, grief counselor, physician liaison, case manager, and educator. The clinician mentors bedside staff, participates in educational initiatives (e.g., in-services, ACLS, TNCC, BLS, ATLS), and assists with recruitment, retention, and onboarding of new staff. The position also involves monitoring and developing staff as clinical resource nurses, facilitating communication with ancillary departments, and participating in injury prevention efforts through the Trauma Program. Collaboration with the Trauma Registrar and Trauma Program Manager to extract and input data into NTRACS may also be required.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct and indirect care for critically ill and injured patients.
• Serve as a clinical resource to nursing, medical, and ancillary staff.
• Respond to in-house codes, Rapid Response Alerts, Code Strokes, and Code STEMIs.
• Assist with transferring critically ill patients to the ICU.
• Rapidly triage patients to determine treatment options and coordinate care plans with physicians.
• Facilitate care and decrease in-house codes through effective communication and evidence-based practice.
• Act as a project lead for department objectives and process improvement initiatives.
• Provide input and facilitate implementation of the emergency department's goals and objectives.
• Assist with orientation, competencies, and continuing education for staff.
• Participate in the evaluation of clinical staff under the direction of unit leadership.
• Participate in regular staff meetings and assist with recruitment and retention of clinical staff.
• Mentor clinical bedside staff while caring for patients in extreme distress.
• Participate in educational projects, such as in-services, ACLS, TNCC, BLS, and ATLS.
• Assist in the recruitment, retention, and onboarding of new staff, fostering a supportive and collaborative approach.
• Identify and monitor staff to develop as clinical resource nurses.
• Facilitate open and effective communication with ancillary departments and medical staff.
• Communicate areas of concern to leadership and actively identify solutions for correction.
• Utilize appropriate delegation of tasks based on individual skill levels.
• Participate in injury prevention efforts coordinated through the Trauma Program.
• Collaborate with the Trauma Registrar and Trauma Program Manager to extract and input data into NTRACS.

Requirements

• Current licensure to practice nursing in the State of Tennessee (or multistate licensure from a compact state within three months of hire for non-Tennessee residents).
• BLS certification completed prior to going to the unit/department and maintained thereafter.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification upon hire.
• Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses (ATCN) certification and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) within 6 months of hire.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification within 6 months of hire.
• Certification by specialty within 1 year of exam eligibility for area of practice.

Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing (required).
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred).
• Minimum of 2 years of clinical nursing experience in adult ICU and/or adult ED (required).
• Evidence of leadership abilities (required).
• Knowledge of general nursing principles and practice skills, organizational functions, policies, and regulations.
• Knowledge of current trends and new developments in nursing.
• Previous case management, quality improvement, and/or discharge planning experience (preferred).
• ACLS instructor certification (preferred).
• ATCN or TNCC instructor certification (preferred).
• CPR instructor certification (preferred).
• Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) certification (preferred).
• PALS instructor certification (preferred).
