About the Role

Registered professional nurse who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients for a designated shift. Prescribes nursing care based on the nursing process consistent with the medical plan of care, incorporating input from the patient and significant others. Collaborates with physicians and other healthcare team members to coordinate the delivery of patient care across all age groups, including neonatal, infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Incorporates teaching and discharge planning into the overall care plan and delegates aspects of patient care to other nursing staff based on their clinical competence and legal scope of practice. This position is union-represented by CNA.

Responsibilities

• Utilizes the nursing process to assess patients, design and implement an individualized plan of care, and evaluate its effectiveness, patient response, and progress toward established goals; modifies the plan as necessary.
• Considers age-specific, cultural, and spiritual needs of patients in care delivery.
• Collaborates with other disciplines to formulate and execute the patient’s plan of care.
• Applies knowledge of illnesses, injuries, diseases, and developmental stages to deliver patient care.
• Utilizes pharmacology knowledge (actions, routes, side effects, contraindications) when preparing and administering medications and IV therapy.
• Provides patient and family education across all phases of care to promote cooperation, reduce apprehension, and ensure compliance; evaluates effectiveness through feedback.
• Responds to emergency patient situations or internal/external disasters following established protocols, remaining calm and informing appropriate personnel.
• Oversees patient care delivery, challenges or corrects errors to ensure patient safety, and reports observations, reactions, and problems in a timely manner.
• Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for clinical decision-making and problem-solving on assigned shifts.
• Ensures continuity of care by processing and following through on physician’s orders and all aspects of the treatment plan.
• Sets appropriate priorities in patient care and adapts to changes in workload.
• Acts as the patient’s advocate, ensuring patient rights are preserved and intervening when necessary.
• Delegates tasks to CNAs and student nurses based on their clinical competence and job descriptions.
• Practices registered nursing in accordance with the California Nurse Practice Act and maintains awareness of professional responsibilities and legal scope of practice.
• Utilizes communication skills and resources to ensure effective communication with patients, families, staff, physicians, and coworkers.
• Documents assessments, nursing interventions, and care provided for all assigned patients.
• Performs technical aspects of patient care according to established policies and procedures, adapting techniques to patients’ age and unique needs.
• Prepares and administers medications and IVs with consideration for age-specific needs.
• Performs emergency procedures such as CPR and assesses patient response.
• Demonstrates safe use of equipment, including electric beds, infusion pumps, mechanical lifts, suction devices, physiologic monitors, traction equipment, and other patient care devices.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of practice: Required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an approved vendor per AH policy: Required.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN): Preferred.
• Acute care facility experience: Preferred.

Unit-Specific Requirements

• All Units Admitting Telemetry Patients:
  • Dysrhythmia recognition course or demonstrated competency: Required.
  • ACLS: Preferred.
• Critical Care Units:
  • Dysrhythmia recognition course or demonstrated competency and ACLS: Required.
  • ICU completion of Critical Care Course within 1 year of hire: Required.
  • Demonstrated competency in IV Sedation within 6 months: Required; Preferred.
• Perinatal:
  • Neonatal Resuscitation within 6 months of hire for Nursery/NICU and Labor and Delivery: Required.
  • Intermediate Fetal Monitoring within 6 months of hire for L&D: Required.
  • L&D – If Basic Fetal Monitoring acquired within 3 months of hire, Advanced Fetal Monitoring within 1 year of hire and ACLS within 6 months of hire: Required; Preferred.
• PACU/SDS:
  • PALS certification within 1 year of hire: Required.
  • ACLS: Required.
  • IV Sedation within 6 months of hire: Required; Preferred.
• ER:
  • ACLS and PALS: Required.
  • TNCC within 1 year of hire: Required.
  • Demonstrated competency in IV sedation within 6 months: Required.
  • MICN and CEN: Preferred.
• Procedures Nurse Interventional Radiology RN:
  • Dysrhythmia recognition: Required.
  • ACLS and IV Sedation within 6 months: Required.
  • PICC competence: Preferred.
• Cancer Center:
  • Chemotherapy Certification: Required.
  • OCN Certification within 2 years of hire: Required.
  • PICC certification: Preferred.

Pay

The estimated base pay for this position is $72.41 to $94.47 per hour. Additional individual compensation may be available through differentials, extra shift incentives, bonuses, etc. Base pay is only a portion of the total rewards package, and a comprehensive benefits program is available for qualifying positions.
