RN Director - Clinical Decision Unit

About the Role

Full‑time Nursing Director responsible for the Clinical Decision Unit, House Supervisors, Telemetry Monitoring Unit (ARC), Float Pool, and Transport team at Turkey Creek Medical Center in Knoxville, TN. The Director, Med/Surg leads the medical‑surgical department, ensuring safe, high‑quality patient care, operational excellence, strategic direction, regulatory compliance, and staff development.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee clinical operations in the medical‑surgical department, ensuring patient care is delivered safely, efficiently, and in alignment with evidence‑based practices and regulatory standards.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary teams to coordinate patient care across the continuum.
  • Manage departmental budgets, staffing, and resource allocation to maintain financial efficiency while meeting patient care needs.
  • Monitor key performance indicators and quality metrics, identify improvement opportunities, and lead initiatives to optimize outcomes and performance.
  • Facilitate open communication between clinical staff, administration, and external stakeholders to address care needs and operational challenges.
  • Respond promptly to patient care concerns, complaints, and incidents; conduct investigations and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of industry trends, emerging clinical practices, and regulatory changes.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and professional development for departmental staff; schedule employees and address staffing issues.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, set goals, and give feedback to staff.
  • Collaborate with hospital leadership on strategic planning, budgeting, resource allocation, and long‑term planning.
  • Monitor expenditures to ensure cost‑effective service delivery and evaluate new technologies for operational efficiency.
  • Develop and implement departmental policies, procedures, and protocols to optimize quality and efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory bodies, oversee accreditation processes, and participate in audits and inspections.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance and comply with all policies and standards.
  • May work in a staff role when required, fulfilling duties and competencies of the position.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field (required) or seven (7) + years of direct experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Master’s Degree preferred.
  • 3–5 years of experience in a closely related field with a Bachelor’s degree.
  • 3–5 years of previous leadership experience preferred.
  • RN – Registered Nurse – State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure (required).
  • BLS – Basic Life Support certification (required).
