About the Role
The Nurse in this position coordinates patient care and staffing on a daily basis. This individual is responsible for assisting with care planning, procedures, staff education, nursing staff and patient scheduling, supply/equipment ordering and management, nursing daily direction and leadership, work with and report directly to Director of Patient Services. In addition, it is expected that this individual provide care/service in accordance with regulatory and accrediting agencies’ standards in a manner that reflects St. Michael’s Hospital Avera (SMHA) standard of quality patient/resident care and commitment to Service Excellence.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities Include The Following
- Demonstrates Professional Accountability - performing technical procedures necessary for the job responsibilities of a Nurse in a safe, effective, efficient, legal, compassionate and professional manner.
- This includes communication, mentoring, acceptance of criticism, professional development, participation in organizational activities and stewardship of the hospital’s resources.

Technical/Professional Competencies
- Utilizes the nursing process of assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating all nursing care provided.
- Acts as a patient/family advocate and intervenes if necessary to ensure that patient care is not compromised.
- Affirms the patient, records significant conditions and reactions and notifies supervisor or physician appropriately.
- Makes a positive contribution to the morale of the department.
- Demonstrates ability to provide appropriate care to patients of all ages.
- Completes all mandatory competencies identified for the job and department.
- Demonstrates knowledge of department specific infection control, disaster, and safety policies.
- Completes department specific orientation and annual unit skills inventory checklists within appropriate time frames.
- Completes computer competency checklist and remains current with computer updates.
- Demonstrates knowledge and ability to maintain competency in care of patient’s with medical diagnosis, including those with chronic and multi-system failure.
- Responsible for coordination and oversight of Chronic Care Management (CCM) services for patients with multiple chronic conditions.
- Able to learn new computer programs and concepts and teach them to others effectively.
- Organize staff for scheduling and meeting purposes.
- Demonstrates leadership skills in an effective, positive manner.
- Assess skills and capabilities of staff and assist in education and competency training to address needs identified.
- Coordinates patient care and delegates activities to other health care team members.
Qualifications
- Registered Nurse.
- Graduate of a nursing education program.
- Prefer 6-12 months experience.
- Graduate of a nursing education program.
Education and Experience
- Graduate of a nursing education program.
- Prefer 6-12 months experience.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Current RN licensure in the state of SD or “multi-state privilege” to practice in SD if residing in a compact state outside of SD.
- Current CPR certification or completion upon next available program.
