RN – Colorectal Surgery

About the role

The H50 Colorectal Surgery unit, part of the Digestive Disease Institute, performs more than 5,000 surgical procedures annually with a team of 16 colorectal surgeons and dedicated nursing staff. Nurses experience strong teamwork, empathetic leadership from Nurse Managers, and support for delivering exceptional care to patients with Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, colon cancer, and genetic bowel disease.

Responsibilities

• Assist fellow caregivers in delivering exceptional care by interacting directly with patients, families, and visitors, and providing healthcare information as needed.
• Provide direct nursing care.
• Implement and monitor patient care plans.
• Monitor, record, and communicate patients’ conditions.
• Evaluate, update, and revise the plan of care to achieve expected outcomes.
• Note and carry out physician and nursing orders.
• Assess and coordinate patients’ discharge needs.
• Educate patients and families with culturally appropriate educational materials.
• Administer prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with approved nursing protocols.

Minimum qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited School of Professional Nursing (ADN or BSN program).
• Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
• One year of current acute‑care RN experience OR military RN experience.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross.
• If working in a critical‑care area: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification through the AHA or American Red Cross within one year of hire.

Preferred qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

Physical requirements

• Full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye‑hand coordination.
• Standing and walking for extended periods.
• Corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
• Work under stressful conditions and irregular hours.
• Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.
• Medium work – exerting 20–50 lb occasionally, 10–25 lb frequently, or up to 10 lb constantly to move objects.
• Physical demand requirements exceed those for Light Work.
• Follow standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

Pay

Hourly range: $35.50 – $55.60. The actual compensation will consider work history, experience, skill set, and education. This range does not include shift differentials, overtime, or the value of Cleveland Clinic’s benefits package.

Schedule

Rotating day/night shifts from 7:00 p.m. – 7:30 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m., with every other weekend and holiday rotation requirements.
