RN Clinical - PMOB Oncology and Treatment Center - Full Time 8 Hour Days (Non-Exempt) (Non-Union)

As an integral part of the interdisciplinary team at the Pasadena Clinic, the Registered Nurse utilizes the nursing process to provide therapeutic care to patients and their families in an outpatient setting, with an emphasis on administering chemotherapy, biotherapy, and blood products. The RN also manages patients requiring acute care to potentially avoid hospitalization. Additional responsibilities include escorting patients, recording vital signs and medication lists, monitoring patient flow, assisting physicians with minor procedures, performing EKGs, preparing patient charts, administering medications, scheduling diagnostic tests, and handling various administrative duties.

Responsibilities

• Follows policies and procedures, including accessing online manuals and references.
• Applies the nursing process in assessment, interventions, communication, and education of patients and their families.
• Assessment: Completes nursing assessment and screening upon patient arrival for therapy.
• Diagnosis: Interprets assessment information and formulates nursing diagnoses.
• Plan: Maintains problem lists, medication lists, and allergies lists.
• Intervention:
  • Administers medications safely and efficiently, following appropriate precautions.
  • Administers chemotherapy and biotherapy according to policy and procedure.
  • Delegates tasks based on scope of practice and competency of team members.
  • Acts as a patient advocate by intervening for effective management of side effects.
• Documentation:
  • Ensures complete and accurate documentation on all forms.
  • Records assessments and screenings at each appointment, including pain scale and side effect reviews.
  • Obtains signed consents for invasive procedures and blood product administration.
  • Ensures medication double-checks and full documentation.
• Education: Provides patient and family education based on treatment plans or changes in condition.
• Equipment:
  • Maintains and monitors B/P machines and IV infusion pumps.
  • Responds to equipment alarms and reports defective equipment to appropriate departments.
• Communication:
  • Communicates effectively with healthcare team members, patients, and families.
  • Provides reports to inpatient areas or departments for urgent patient care situations.
  • Conducts appropriate patient/family interactions and effectively triages phone calls.
  • Uses email and SBAR (Situation-Background-Assessment-Recommendation) for clear communication.
• Organization:
  • Manages time effectively, organizes, and prioritizes responsibilities.
  • Takes meal breaks without incurring overtime.
• Regulatory Compliance:
  • Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals, including using two patient identifiers (full name and date of birth).
  • Avoids unapproved abbreviations and uses procedural time-outs for invasive procedures.
  • Completes medication reconciliation and maintains appropriate communication between providers.
  • Ensures audible alarms are functional and manages hazardous waste (biohazard, medication, sharps, chemotherapy).
  • Complies with HIPAA, OSHA (e.g., no food or drink in clinical areas), and JCAHO standards.
  • Handles critical values and dictated orders according to protocol.
  • Maintains a safe work environment for self and others.
• Quality Measures: Identifies and participates in data collection and process improvements.
• Professional Development:
  • Participates in professional hospital/nursing activities, including relief charge nurse duties and nursing committees/councils.
  • Attends educational workshops and maintains membership in the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS).
  • Assists in developing or updating patient education materials.
• Accepts and completes additional duties as assigned.
• Bonus Points: Professional certification in oncology or related specialty.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) required. *Grandfathered from BSN if hired prior to 12/2019.
• 2 years of oncology experience in an ambulatory care setting.
• Excellent communication skills, including proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English.
• Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions, with the ability to perform duties such as whole blood collection and apheresis procedures.
• Chemotherapy competency.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in two or more of the following areas: oncology, cardiology, vascular, or cardiothoracic.
• Specialty certification in oncology (e.g., ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy certification).

Licenses/Certifications

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license from the California Board of Registered Nursing.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association.
• Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) certification (must be obtained within 30 days of hire if not already held).

Pay

The hourly rate range for this position is $55.12 - $90.95.
