About the Role

The staff nurse provides nursing care to patients from birth through the lifecycle utilizing nursing processes to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. They function within the framework of organizational policies and procedures, demonstrating professional growth and accountability. The staff nurse maintains standards of practice and coordinates patient care activities to ensure quality nursing care.

Responsibilities

Qualifications

Education

• Graduate from a recognized, accredited school of nursing.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing Required.

Work Experience

• No prior experience required; new graduates eligible.
• Nursing experience in a hospital setting Preferred.
• 1 year in a hospital setting Preferred for PRN positions.

Licenses and Certifications

• Current Georgia State RN license or NLC/eNLC Multistate License Required.
• Basic Life Support (BCLS) certification Required.

Specialty-Specific Certifications

• Cardiac Tele: ACLS certification (required within 180 days for new nurses or nurse residents).
• Critical Care: ACLS certification (required within 180 days for new nurses or nurse residents).
• Dialysis: CDN (Certified Dialysis Certificate) Preferred.
• Emergency Department: ACLS and PALS certification (required within 180 days for new nurses or nurse residents; experienced nurses have 6 months to obtain PALS).
• Infusion/Oncology: Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Certification (required prior to independent chemotherapy administration).
• Pediatrics:
  • Identifies, reports, and provides protective measures for high-risk situations (e.g., abuse, neglect, failure to thrive, potential abduction).
  • PALS certification (required within 180 days for new nurses or nurse residents at Piedmont Columbus Hospital).
  • PEARS or PALS certification (required within 180 days for new nurses or nurse residents at Piedmont Athens Hospital).
• Surgical Services:
  • PreOp/PACU/ENDO/CSU: ACLS; PALS if unit provides pediatric care (required within 180 days for new nurses or nurse residents).
  • OR: BLS only (required).
• Women’s Services:
  • Labor and Delivery: ACLS certification (required within 180 days for new nurses or nurse residents), NRP by end of orientation, AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Program within 12 months.
  • Mother/Baby: NRP by end of orientation.
  • NICU: NRP by end of orientation.
  • NAT (Newborn Admission Team): NRP by end of orientation.
  • Nursery: NRP by end of orientation.
