Responsibilities

  • Absorbs primary responsibility for the care plan for a patient or group of patients, adhering to unit standards and required nursing care for the designated patient population.
  • Effectively delegates tasks and responsibilities to other healthcare team members and takes responsibility for follow-up and collaboration.
  • Conducts admission assessments according to specific department standards, including gathering patient history, physical, and psychosocial assessments. Utilizes this data along with diagnostic information, pharmacological details, and patient/family perspectives to formulate nursing diagnoses related to focus problem areas and establish care goals.
  • Develops a care plan collaboratively with the patient and family, reviewing priorities each shift to ensure alignment with patient goals and expectations.
  • Enacts the care plan according to current nursing standards, evidence-based practices, and hospital protocols, ensuring a safe and supportive environment.
  • Maintains a collaborative relationship with the healthcare team to achieve patient care objectives and goals.
  • Administers medications and nursing treatments within the scope of practice.
  • Applies the St. Luke’s Comfort/C.A.R.E. Professional Practice Model in daily nursing care.
  • Assesses and selects teaching methods suitable for the patient’s and their families’ age-specific needs, cultural background, gender, learning readiness, and comprehension levels.
  • Consults relevant hospital resources to provide specialized education.
  • Demonstrates awareness of patient and workplace safety, preventing errors, accidents, and infections, and promptly reporting any concerns.
  • Incorporates education into the patient’s hospital stay, covering the care plan, pre- and post-operative procedures, diagnostic tests, and discharge instructions.
  • Integrates preventive health maintenance into the education plan.

Qualifications

  • Graduate from an accredited nursing program.
  • Hold current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the State of Iowa or a compact state.
  • Write, read, comprehend, and speak fluent English.
  • Show multicultural sensitivity.
  • Display proficiency in performing basic/advanced nursing procedures and operating specialized equipment.
  • Complete a basic computer course on the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) through in-hospital training.
