RN - Birth Center Registered Nurse

Purpose

Provides and directs safe, effective, and culturally-competent patient care for mothers and infants.

Key Accountabilities

  • Assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care using critical thinking and evidenced-based practice
  • Adherence to Professional Practice Standards as defined by ANA
  • Active participation in quality monitoring and performance improvement activities
  • Expanded roles to include labor and delivery and/or transitional nursery when effective assessment skills, independent judgment, and critical thinking are evident

Supervisory Responsibility

Direction: Some accountability for scheduling, assigning or coordinating work. Checks quality of work and provides guidance, instruction, training and direction to others. Serves as group leader or acts in an informal "assistant supervisory" or "lead" role. May be expected to provide information or suggestions on human resources matters.

Reports to: Manager

Key relationships: Co-workers/Health System Employees, Outside Agencies/Other Health Care Providers, General Public/Visitors/Volunteers, Physicians/Medical Office Staff, Students/Interns/Residents/Outside Instructors, Patients, Families, and Significant Others.

Education

  • Associate's Degree in Nursing
  • NRP within 6 months
  • Basic Life Support
  • Preferred: Clinical certification; Baccalaureate in Nursing

Licensure & Registration

  • Registered Nurse in Iowa
  • Registered Nurse in Illinois within 1 year

Interpersonal Skills

Interaction with a variety of people inside or outside the organization. Communications are of moderate difficulty and sensitivity. Contact with others may involve detailed & lengthy dialogues & exchanges of information. Requires a moderate amount of interpersonal skills. Interactions involve dealing with moderately complicated problem situations or stressful encounters.

Physical Demands

Very High Intensity: A main requirement is physical labor with forces equivalent to lifting more than 50 pounds. Requires significant physical stamina and endurance. Produces considerable fatigue and requires periods of rest. Work could require very fine dexterity and extreme muscular control, involving various body postures. These very high intensity demands occur occasionally (10–35% of the time).

Working Conditions

Routine exposure to highly adverse environmental conditions including physical hazards, health and safety risks, and otherwise undesirable characteristics. Personal risks require safety equipment or precautions to be followed closely. Exposure to these conditions is limited to 70% or less of the work day.
