About the Role

The Registered Professional Nurse identifies patient alterations in health, assesses human responses to actual and potential health problems, and implements nursing interventions based on theoretical concepts from nursing and other arts and sciences to achieve outcomes that facilitate resolution of these issues. The nurse involves the patient, family, or significant others in assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation efforts whenever possible.

The Registered Nurse supervises and directs care provided by Licensed Practical Nurses and Unlicensed Assistive Personnel, assigns and delegates care to qualified team members, and coordinates care with other professional disciplines as needed. The role includes unit-based activities that contribute to a positive work and professional environment.

The rehabilitation nurse applies specialized knowledge and clinical skills to address the profound impact of disability on individuals and their significant others, focusing on physical, social, emotional, economic, and vocational disruptions. They provide comfort, therapy, and health-conducive adjustments while supporting adaptive capabilities within the nursing process. The nurse systematically assesses functional and health patterns, formulates nursing diagnoses, and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to deliver comprehensive rehabilitation care.

Key concepts applied by the rehabilitation nurse include growth and development, optimum wellness, socialization, sexuality, role theory, adaptation, learning process, education, and change process. The role adheres to the Standards of Rehabilitation Nursing Practice, covering Data Collection, Nursing Diagnosis, Planning and Goal-Setting, Intervention, Evaluation, Professional Development, Interdisciplinary Collaboration, Quality Assurance, and Research.

Responsibilities

• Involve patients, families, or significant others in assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation efforts.
• Supervise and direct care provided by Licensed Practical Nurses and Unlicensed Assistive Personnel.
• Assign and delegate care to qualified members of the healthcare team.
• Coordinate care with other professional disciplines as needed.
• Perform unit-based activities that contribute to a positive work and professional environment.
• Apply specialized knowledge to address the impact of disability on individuals and their significant others.
• Provide comfort, therapy, and health-conducive adjustments while supporting adaptive capabilities.
• Systematically assess functional and health patterns and formulate nursing diagnoses.
• Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to deliver comprehensive rehabilitation care.
• Adhere to the Standards of Rehabilitation Nursing Practice, including data collection, planning, intervention, evaluation, professional development, interdisciplinary collaboration, quality assurance, and research.

Requirements

• Graduation from an approved nursing program.
• BSN preferred; required within three years of hire for all nurses hired after April 30, 2014.
• Professional nursing board certification in specialty area preferred.
• Specialty certification required within two years of specialty experience at Shands or by the certification eligibility date for all nurses hired after June 30, 2011.
• Licensed to practice nursing in the state of Florida.
