RMH Central Sterile Department - Surgical Instrument Technician

About the role

Performs decontamination, preparation, sterilization and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment throughout the surgery center, hospital and physician offices, utilizing infection control and safety practices during all phases of the process.

Responsibilities

  • Retrieves contaminated instruments and delivers sterile instruments to where needed.
  • Removes debris by manually cleaning instruments.
  • Responsible for the operation and maintenance of decontamination equipment.
  • Inspects instruments and equipment to ensure the safety of patients.
  • Tests and reports detected problems with all equipment.
  • Responsible for separating and keeping track of items that have been cleaned and sterilized.
  • Ensures removal of all waste matter from transfer carts.
  • Responsible for organizing, storing, and keeping records of sterile supplies.
  • Responsible for checking the expiration dates on supplies.
  • Maintains a clean work area following established departmental policies and procedures, and infection control standards.
  • Properly operates all mechanical machinery within central sterile.
  • Applies established policies and procedures in completing work assignments.
  • Properly de-lints towels and sheets.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

Qualifications

  • Certification in sterile processing (preferred).
  • Previous sterile processing experience (preferred).

Physical Requirements

  • Must meet Department of Labor’s MEDIUM duty standard (exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly).
  • Able to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for an 8-12 hour shift.
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 60 pounds and pushing loaded carts weighing in excess of 200 pounds.

Working Environment

  • Physical working environment may include high pressure steam, chemical, electrical, mechanical, bio-waste, stress, back strain, and body fluids.
  • Environmental conditions may include variations in temperature, noise, odors, and multi-stimuli.
  • Will be working in PPE for extended periods of time.

  • Works with direction to effectively carry out varied responsibilities.
  • Must demonstrate flexibility in response to changes in work volume, staff, and scheduling.
  • Must have an understanding of and adherence to Infection Control policies and procedures.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize time to maximize personal efficiency and meet deadlines.
  • Requires the ability to maintain confidentiality of all patient information.

Schedule

Full-time, Monday through Friday (11:00 AM – 7:30 PM). Call requirements include weekend and holiday rotation.

Scheduled weekly hours: 40.
