About the Role

GTRI's Research IT Department (RITD) is seeking highly motivated students to join the IT Operations Team and assist with research project work in the Information and Communications Laboratory (ICL). This Student Assistant position for Fall 2026 offers hands-on experience in building, maintaining, and troubleshooting enterprise-class computer systems, networks, and related infrastructure in a multi-tiered, distributed environment.

Responsibilities

• Support and educate users in the operation of computer systems.
• Facilitate the diagnosis and repair of computer and network issues.
• Install and maintain enterprise applications, including Microsoft Exchange, Active Directory, MS System Center, Jira, JAMF, and other enterprise tools.
• Improve, integrate, and deploy highly available and secure network services.
• Gain programming and technical experience in a professional IT environment.

Requirements

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Experience with computer operation and basic client PC troubleshooting in a Microsoft environment.
• Familiarity with office applications including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to quickly learn new software applications and tools.
• Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Security, or Information Technology.
• 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA.
• Must be registered for at least 6 credit hours at your university.
• U.S. citizenship is required due to federal research contracts.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Linux or Mac operating systems.
• Programming experience in C++, C, C#, Java, or other languages.
• Familiarity with PowerShell, JavaScript, PHP, or other scripting languages.
• Familiarity with Windows Server OS and server technologies, including Group Policy, OS/Software Deployment, Exchange, SQL Server, DNS, DHCP, Microsoft System Center, IIS, and Apache.
• Familiarity with network appliances and hardware, including NAS/SAN devices, routers, network switches, and firewalls.

Schedule

10-20 hours per week.
