Risk Manager (US Card)
About the Role
The Risk Manager on Capital One's Absolute Control Team (ACT) will utilize a background in risk management, analysis, and process design to direct complex optimization initiatives for control testing and operations. Serving as a senior individual contributor or indirect team leader, you will drive modernization throughout the risk framework by implementing AI, constructing digital ecosystems, and developing video resources. The ACT serves as a strategic line of defense dedicated to strengthening "well managed" capabilities across Card and driving sustainable innovation through centralized risk mitigation support, overseeing 18 Key Business Processes and more than 210 control reports.
Responsibilities
- Drive Next-Gen Control Improvement: Lead multi-faceted process improvement projects for control testing, including leveraging AI to optimize control authoring, control repair, and real-time dashboarding.
- Build & Maintain Digital Ecosystems: Design, evolve, and maintain digital ecosystems, tools, templates, and job aides that streamline well-managed governance, reporting, and proactive risk analytics.
- AI & Multimedia Content Creation: Create engaging video content and multimedia resources leveraging AI and modern digital tools to simplify complex risk concepts, train teams, and improve control execution across the organization.
- Change Management & Relationship Building: Build strong cross-functional partnerships and execute change management roadmaps to influence, align, and onboard stakeholders to modernized risk processes.
- Insights & Control Operations Support: Gather, interpret, and leverage data/insights from control execution monitoring to develop actionable recommendations that elevate risk profile and optimize business results.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner seamlessly across multiple levels and organizations (Product, Tech, Operations, Enterprise Risk) to achieve strategic objectives and execute initiatives for new controls and products.
- Indirect Leadership & Guidance: Provide subject matter expertise and indirect leadership/mentorship to project teams and onshore/offshore execution partners, setting clear expectations and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
Requirements
- Strategic Influence & Change Management: Proven ability to build relationships, influence partners without direct authority, and guide organizations through change management execution and process adoption.
- Tech & AI Fluency: A deep curiosity for emerging technologies; able to harness AI capabilities for control authoring, video creation, and dashboarding. Ability to translate technical concepts between Product, Tech, and Operations teams to drive consensus.
- Process & Digital Innovation: Experience designing and maintaining digital ecosystems, workflows, and automated reporting solutions that modernize traditional control testing and risk frameworks.
- Curiosity & Problem Solving: A willingness to challenge the status quo, think outside the box, and advocate for transformative risk and control solutions.
- Results Focus: A bias for action and familiarity with scaled agile or iterative frameworks to test, learn, and deliver sustainable business outcomes quickly.
- Communication & Storytelling: Strong ability to create multimedia content (including AI-generated video), deliver impactful presentations, and translate complex data into compelling risk narratives for leadership.
- Analytical Mindset: Skilled at leveraging data to identify process bottlenecks, evaluate risk leverage points, and demonstrate the ROI of risk management investments.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
- High School Diploma, GED, or Equivalent Certification
- At least 5 years of experience in Process Management, Project Management, or Risk Management
- At least 3 years of experience in Control Execution, Control Testing, or Process Improvement
- At least 2 years of experience leading cross-functional projects or acting as an indirect team lead/senior contributor
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree
- 2+ years of experience in risk, audit, or consulting for modernized cloud-based technology solutions
- Experience leveraging AI tools for content creation, control repair/authoring, or process automation
- 3+ years of experience in Process or Project Management driving enterprise change initiatives
- 2+ years of experience working directly with Product and Technology teams

Pay
The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based on the agreed-upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
- McLean, VA: $151,900 - $173,400
- Richmond, VA: $138,100 - $157,700
Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location. This role is also eligible to earn performance-based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long-term incentives (LTI).
