I recently passed the ACAMS’ new Certified Global Sanctions Specialist (CGSS) certification and have received questions about the certification and my preparation experience. Below, I address key points that may be relevant if you're considering this certification.

About the Certification

The CGSS is a certification launched by ACAMS in late 2019, with the first examinations held in January 2020. Unlike the CAMS certification, which focuses on Anti-Money Laundering (AML), the CGSS is dedicated to Global Sanctions.

My motivation for pursuing this certification stemmed from the evolving demands of the financial crime compliance field. Modern professionals need a broad skill set that includes AML, Fraud, Cyber, and Sanctions. While I had experience and certifications in AML (CAMS) and Fraud (CFE), Sanctions was a gap I wanted to fill in my professional development.

Study Materials and Preparation

The CGSS study guide is approximately 250 pages long (excluding the appendix and practice questions) and covers five chapters:

  • Governance and Enforcement
  • Sanctions Evasion Techniques
  • Sanctions Due Diligence
  • Sanctions Screening

Each chapter includes case studies to apply theoretical knowledge. The complexity level is comparable to the CAMS study guide.

I studied for about two weeks, including reading the guide most evenings and dedicating two full days to focused study. I recommend a condensed study period rather than spreading it out over several months, as this approach tends to yield better first-attempt pass rates.

Exam Format

The exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions covering all five chapters of the study guide. The allotted time is 175 minutes, which I found more than sufficient—I completed the exam in just over 110 minutes, including reviewing all questions. Most questions were scenario-based, similar to the CAMS exam. The test is administered at Pearson VUE test centers.

Packages and Costs

ACAMS currently offers two packages:

  • CGSS Standard Package (USD 1,695): Includes the PDF study guide, online flashcards, and the first exam attempt.
  • CGSS Virtual Classroom Bundle (USD 2,180): Includes six 2-hour live online classes in addition to the standard package materials.

I opted for the Standard Package and did not use the flashcards.

Value and Professional Impact

The CGSS certification added significant value to my professional knowledge, particularly in Governance, Enforcement, and Sanctions Due Diligence. While there is overlap between AML and Sanctions techniques, the certification highlighted subtle differences that can impact investigations and regulatory reporting.

Though the cost (USD 1,695) is not insignificant, I found the investment worthwhile. Whether the CGSS will become a "gold standard" or a resume must-have remains to be seen, but it certainly enhances professional development and broadens expertise in financial crime compliance.
